Half an hour would probably do me, so I guess I'll aim to get there for 7am and tweak the bike for a bit.

I think it is water that bothers me most. I am happy taking from clear streams and boiling it but less happy drinking from the streams. It is the second half that concerns me.

I don't want to go off route at the western end unless I have to and if I ride through the night I will be at the town around ~70% distance in the middle of the night after everything closes. I have done the third section twice during the day and recall it as perhaps a bit featureless and difficult in the dark. Toying with taking a stove and meal and stopping early and hitting town for breakfast.

I really should have made a definite decision by now.

Are you sure Kevin? Most don't appear to bother until after they've set off

I'm taking a couple of meals and hopefully will make the takeaways

The least calorie dense food I'm carrying are jelly babies

Garmin had me down as burning 10,000 calories last year

Stu: Ha, I am too aware of my lack of ability and try and have a plan before I start.

Riderdown: I calculated 1,200gms of carbs (for 20 hours moving) and taking 1,000 gms to get me to the stop about 3/4 of the way round. Plus emergency rations.

I'm carrying a handful of water purification tablets and hoping to find clear water sources. This is why I prefer to carry a couple of bottles/bladders rather than one big one and so where need be can drink from one while the tablets work their magic on the other, although they do only take 30 mins to work if I ever run completely dry.

About 800 for me. I'm sick of carrying too much and getting to the end with like 750g of food.

Almost always grab a snack at a shop anyway whilst I get water, so I might as well factor that.

A bag of Carb & Electrolyte Drink Mix to alternate with Skratch labs in my hydration packs.

3 PF 30 Caffeine Gels and 4 packets of PF 30 Chew - Mint & Lemon.

Along with the other instant meals I should have 1200g of carbs. Along with anything I can find on the way I should be good.

My research tells me that water should be ok without having to go to filtered river water.

Fine lines though as too little is ride ending

Vegan and whilst , though i could not for decades, I can always get a meal these days i still don't risk it and always carry enough for the ride. (Need a supermarket really for resupply)

Possibly. That said, I do a ton of fasted training and I rarely eat for the last couple of hours anyway as I usually can't face it.

Very good at just dropping my HR and going on fat reserves.

Even the raciest racing snake could easily pull 10,000kcal from their fat stores. Though they probably wouldn't enjoy the experience (nor the speed).

Me too. What's the longest you've done Rich. Bet you can't beat mine and I bet you cheat with the water (but already handicap yourself with being hungover).

One day we shoudlcompare notes :-bd

Given water isn't calories, it's definitely not cheating. In fact, if you want to actually be able to burn your fat stores effectively, you definitely need water.

I appreciate you have different requirements on that front though.

From memory, my longest fastest ride was 11 hours, wearing a 15kg weighted vest. (I was riding with a much weaker rider, and I needed to make it a serious challenge)

Well I think it all looks smashing. Classic Bearboning territory.
Plenty of pork pies and lashings of ginger beer.
Nice one Stu!

Two thoughts.
  • I need new waterproof socks
  • Might buy one of them Restrap carry harness thingies
Cause it looks like a lot of pushing through boggy tussocks...

I'm out with a DNS already. Lower back pain causing me to move about like a sloth for first few hours of waking up. Left it 5 days before making a decision.

Have a good ride you all  Maybe next time!

Restrap stuff is great I have the original front roll holder and seat bag holder. Good as the day it was new still.

It took me a couple of hours, but I did seriously regret my life choices. Had to do a lot of it standing up too, because unsurprisingly weighted vests aren't really made for riding in.

Aww, really sad to hear that. Still, plenty of time to get training for 2024!

Sorry to hear this Shaf, no chance to keep stretching it out & maybe jump-on the following weekend (If Stu's ok with that)..

I've just got the route through this morn, looking like i'll have to buy a new frame bag in order to take some food & cooking kit!
The bothy looks like a good option to take a min & re-fuel..

Very little riding is causing me a fair bit of event-anxiety tho! :|
