Garmin gpx troubles. Advice needed!

Post by Specialist Hoprocker »

I have an old Edge 810. I've been using it for a couple of months for navigation. The longest ride I've done was about 100km using a gpx provided by the event organiser. The turn by turn direction and map navigation worked fine.

Anyway i planned a little route this morning on Komoot and transferred to Garmin Connect and then synced with the edge. It appeared on the Edge but looking at the summary there was no date. The route didn't appear on the map and there was no direction. So i reverted to my Fenix watch using the same gpx and it worked fine?

I'm riding over the whole of next weekwnd so I thought i should check the route loads ok onto the Edge. Same problem! Aaargh!

What am I doing wrong? I've factory reset the Edge but no luck. I've tried sending the gpx to OS maps and then exporting again back to Connect to see if things change. I've also tried letting Komoot import the gpx again and move it to known paths to see if that jihhers things about. And I've tried loading and much shorter route also created in Komoot and this worked fine.

The only thing i can think of is that there are too many waypoints or something like that for the older Edge but not for the Fenix. Googling has not provided an answer. So I figured there is some BB knowledge about this.

Any advice much appreciated.

Thanks.

Patronising answer (I’m really sorry!) but have you named the route on garmin connect? I always name the route on Komoot and then when it transfers over to my garmin the name of the route disappears and I can’t find the ride

What format is the route in?

It's a gpx. Although I've just converted it on Alltrails to a tcx file and reduced the points to under 200. I think that may have worked. Hang on I'll check!

Did you save it as a "route" or as a "track"? The Garmin units handle them differently.

As a general hint, always save files as GPX *tracks*. That doesn't have the limit on points (waypoints) that you get with *routes* because the two work in different ways. What we'd call a "route", i.e a well defined line to follow, Garmin calls "tracks". Garmin "routes" are a series of waypoints that the unit can find its own way between. That way may be what was intended or it may not.

Righto. I've found that converting the gpx files that Komoot produces into KCX course files on Alltrails does the job. But this is a level of fafd it would be good to avoid!

Whitestone - how do you change the output from track to route? I'm using the Komoot app rather than website so maybe that is the problem. Or perhaps Komoot doesn't give an option.

Found that i can convert courses and tracks and routes using rhe Garmin explore app. I've read their explanation of the difference but still not sure I get it!

I don't use Komoot so can't say (just don't get on with it). You'll have to look through their help files.

GPX files are actually just plain text so you can open them in any editor, Notepad, TextEdit, Vim, whatever. There'll be a bit of preamble then either a long list of <trkpoint> or <routePoint> elements. You might be able to tell which belongs to which type of course.

Fwiw as I have the same unit, I create routes and download as gpx track then just drag n drop into the (edit, corrected) New Files folder location in the Garmin.
