They might have to rename the brand itself in case Salsa dancers or Salsa eaters get offended
...except that is in fact why the brand is called Salsa, Ross Shafer's prodigious consumption of it.

That is not going to happen.
What about Welsh on a deal you ok with that being ( historically) commonly used ( other derogatory terms exist against your fine people/nation) ?
Do you really not see what they are trying to do here ?

So the organisers of the Unbound race initially called it Dirty Kanza using the Kanza people as a basw for this name. Seems surreal that a bikepacking race would actually nominate such a derogatory/offensive name. Is there any more background/history to it (the race being called that).

Surely that's outrageous if they did that calling the Kanza people dirty and using that as the name. Sorry, sounding a bit 'ranty'!! Ground for a lifelong boycott of such an organising crew

Very sad... Won't swear, but it brings some colourful words to mind.

Found some more info on it. Seems like there was some outright/known racism going on there. Flipping bar stewards. Reminds me of a tosser (ex) mate of mine about 20 yesrs ago. Made a racist comment about black people (won't reiterate it, it was that disgusting). Tried correcting his filthy thinking/ideology but didn't get far. Never spoke to the idiot after that..

I dont think its what any parent says to their kids when they experience racism, that is a very different chat about bigotry and injustice.

I imagine they didn't realise when they dreamed it up, it would have been a small event at first. It grew, they then had it pointed out and eventually changed it

Awareness on these things is rapidly growing, I wouldn't jump to condemning people without understanding the history and intentions

did you read the links shaf gave ?
This chain of emails shows that Cummins* and Life Time corporate were aware that the name was offensive to many people in or associated with the Kaw Nation, even as they sought the permission and support to keep the name.
* finally removed for a " racist " FB post on another issue
In this case it may or it may not have been accidental initially but they certainly did not react quickly when informed and indeed defended the name for a number of years before changing it, due to external pressure after initial refusal/reluctance.
“I tried to explain to them that the place is named for a people. If the area was called Mexican Hills would they call the race Dirty Mexican? They totally dismissed the idea of the name being associated with a race of people, I was very upset.”
Had they been informed, apologized and changed the name then you would have a point; they did not do this.

It only took 6000 signatures [https://www.change.org/p/dirty-kanza-name-the-change-dk ] and a racist/derogatory comment by one of the organisers. You're probably right. That the initial story they gave to the indigenous people (as reported by the first of the reports in Bicycling in April) about how they like riding through the dirt through Kanza nation, so they named it Dirty Kanza, wasn't a load of BS.

Like how we used to get dirty paki under the breath, but it wasn't derogatory. Just that Pakistan has a lot of dirty roads and me and my mates originate from there :-bd

Or how after about 3 years of Islamophobic abuse that went to the very top (as a student in Uni, but not by the uni, by the workplacements) just before I decided to leave the course and on one of my final interviews before doing so. I mentioned to my white (or does he prefer caucasian?) tutor who was also a friend, that it was racism that I'd been suffering and nowt to do with the hospital uniform policies. He was flabergasted and I'd have gone with him, had it not been for the afro-carribean senior tutor sat in the meeting that made the 'you for real' face.

Eventually I got a call from the associate head of the hospital with an apology. But the racist cow of the current abuse (sorry to the grass eating cows, I mean no offence) knew the very top boss, so she continued. I managed to not give up the course, met Jean Luc Picard who gave me my certificate of 1st with Hons (Alhamdulillah).

Anyway, probably was all very innocent that it took over a year or more to have name changed of the Kanza race :-bd

Just saying... The racism/prejudism is everywhere. You probably just don't see it. Ask the Palastinian people when their rights will be spoken about more. Or why thw Gaza strip residents don't have access to clean water and it's classed as the worlds largest prison. Modern day apartheid, didn't end with South Africa and Nelson Madela. Look at the concentration (well, barbed wire fences keeping the aborigines of Australia 'behind the fence'. Wonder if their plight has changed yet!!

Anyway, no offence intended or taken. Calling it Dirty Kanza cos they were getting their white socks dirty (Bycying report April 2020) Hilarious!

I wasn't aware of the details, it sounds like the situation was made worse by doubling down and making up stuff to fit.
