Attitude towards the route is definitely a big part.
Ground conditions/ surface as well
How many ‘hard’ BB200 have run in the wet vs ‘easy’ ones run in the dry. My wet 2018 experience was much harder than my dry 2021.

As Greg Lemond said " It doesn't get easier, you just get faster"
How I'm feeling on the day has a huge influence along with trail conditions. The slightest tailwind can feel like a massive boost, the slightest headwind like gravity just doubled.

anything except a direct tail wind is a headwind if you’re not in the mood.

Dave Barter patented the swear-ometer for trail hardness didn't he?
Have you noticed when you are wrecked and there is a headwind, everything ends up being uphill?
