what's happening up at Snakes Pass?

Post by redefined_cycles »

Apparently Simon Warren (100 lovely climbs of UK booklet) tweeted that its closed to cars but cycles are being allowed up. But others are saying it's unsafe and the land is moving!

I've never been up it due to the (crappy) cars and this seems like a good chance. Anyone able to shed some light? Maybe a civil engineer or two might be able to 'itemise' the situation

That's the one report I got sent across so far (on a cycling club groupchat) but not opened it in case it scares and puts me off  ).

This has happened before, about 10 years ago there was a landslip that caused the road to be closed to traffic for several weeks. Bikes were allowed and we rode up a few times.

If you want to ride it Shaf, go sooner rather than later before they start repair works. Just keep an eye out for the damaged road surface, mainly around Alport Bridge area.

langsett, cutgate, lackerbrook, hagg farm, snake, doctors gate, PW, longdendale trail.

a proper tough old ride with some serious sections off doctors gate. :-bd

The subsidence on the road in that area a few months ago was pretty bad, must have been especially hazardous for motorbikes. They seemed to have patched it up recently..
Could be a good time to head over there on a road bike if there's no traffic..
Great area for off-road riding tho!

I was over that way yesterday. Bloomin ace when the road is closed to other traffic. Out of Hayfield all off-road to Snake summit too.

I rode over that way on Friday and had no prior knowledge of the closure until I saw the signs. There were a few other riders heading past the signage though so I followed suit and asked the Highways Agency bloke if I could pass, he had no issue and quite a few riders were coming from the other direction.

The traffic-free ride was sublime! It's a beautiful road (if you like a bit of black-top), but it does usually have a few fast vehicles. I'd certainly recommend it if you get chance.

The road had a few cracks but these were coned off, so very safe.

Hoping for a bivi ride out of Glossop one Saturday/Sunday before it reopens.

Any good spots near the top on the way back over, maybe near the Snake Pass pub

For a bit of local knowledge. What's the most interesting way to ride it pls Rich?

I'm planning a bivy up at doctor's gate if I get tired. Just to ensure I'm not riding insanely obviously.

Firstly, the pub is long gone, now holiday cottages.

Bivvy spots, I guess in the plentiful woodland.

If I had to ride the road, wind direction depending, I'd ride up from Bamford.
