Thirsty?

Post by TheBrownDog »

Try this. It's a Cranktank4 that carries 4l of water which one of the riders in the Badlands 2021 has fitted to their bike. Honestly, I think it's brilliant and I'm not sure my life will be complete without one. Cos, you know, it's so hot and dry here in the Chilterns.

More info here on bikepacking.com and below the website itself. Ive not looked too deeply, but frame angles differ greatly, and this might make it a bit of a jiggle, but as an idea, well, nice one.

4kg.

Plus the tank.

Plus what looks like an armoured hose.

Er.

Maybe it takes a shower attachment.

Or a bath attachment.

You and your TMS, wot you like mate

Can't see any baffles (*) in it either. Once that lot starts sloshing around your bike is gonna make like one of those random-movement 'wicked ball' toy things.

(*) other than baffled looks of course

Reg ,I have seen you go a whole day of hard riding with just a 500ml bottle that was still half full at the pub. This lack of hydra is gonna catch you eventually so Im buying one of these and sending it to you and if you dont put it on your bike I will be very cross. Very.

500ml
500g + 17g bottle + 13g gaffertape/cabletie bottle cage = 530g.

Oh alright, y'got me; plus 140g for the Trailshot  .

I reckon you'd need to drink 4L of water on the ride simply to give you the power to, er, lug 4L of water around on the ride  .

Yes my metabolism is... unusual. Re lack of hydra, paradoxically I'm ectomorphic (or is it 'ectoplasmic'? probably both) too I think, apart from broad shoulders.

I think I told you the story of when I tried the 'body fat ratio tester' stall (or whatever it is) at a fete once. Everyone else was getting some sort of reading on the meter - 'beanpole', 'average', 'well-padded' or whatever. When it was my go they thought the plug had inadvertently been pulled out or something. Shaking the meter did no good. They gave up in the end. Still, in retribution I'll probably be the first to go when we get stranded in the snow and subzero temperatures on top of Long Mynd next Winter Bivvy. They'll be no point eating me though for your survival because you'd lose more calories doing the eating than you'd gain.

I can understand carrying that somewhere very hot and arid but otherwise and as Reg says, it's simply an exercise in TMS. Also, would 4 separate containers (a) perhaps be easier to fit (b) help to spread the weight out and (c) less likely to leave you without should an unfortunate leak or incident befall you?

I reckon it's good to have Tim around to show us a different path. Makes us think.

Admittedly it's a very tussocky hard work path  .

And come on, we've got to admit we're dead jealous of his chair collection :-bd

Best not encourage him too much though  . He'll corrupt any minors listening in, with his subversive ways.

LOL ... I still think it's a good idea. Cant imagine you'd get 4l of water on your bike in less space and you can still get a good sized frame bag over it to carry your chair and cocktail shaker.

I dunno. If I'm solo on an overnighter I just don't feel like roughing it, and my Saturday night solo bikeglamping expedition is a case in point. Big tent. Chair. Dinner at a decent pub. Book. Lighting. Speaker to listen to the wireless. I am currently investigating little tables so I don't have to put my cuppa on the dirty, dirty ground. Just because. I left the Honey Stove behind as I realised how dry the woods are the moment.

I hVe the exact table you're after, Tim

Cascade wild ultralight folding table. It is excellent. I find it easier to pack in a rucksack than on the bike though

I also have a folding ally one from my bushcrafting days

I've got a wooden 4 seater dining table you can have. It's drop leaf, so easy to pack ... some chairs too I think.

When I was a kid, all our holidays involved camping, and one of the things we always took in the big trailer was the BBQ furniture. Drop leaf tables hadn't been invented then, so it was all hands to the deck to shift the table and bench chairs onto the trailer. The tent was massive marquee - 20ft across and 8ft high in the centre. Two weeks on Bribie Island. We needed a table and chairs, so we took them with us.

No it doesn't, although a heavily laden bike will usually make things feel harder than they would otherwise and can make both mechanical and physical breakdown more likely

And indeed mental breakdown as a result of the other two... or simply as a result of knowing you're carrying more than you have to

How would one most easily go about filling a mug or pot from that device? Unscrew the cap/hose then unstrap it from the frame? I guess there is the same issue around refilling it, though I guess the drinking hose could be used if you had enough patience.

I guess you'd have to get the hoe nozzle below the water line and let gravity do the job. It'd take ages. I've changed my mind on this: it'll never catch on.

Don’t let ‘em put you down BD!
I reckon you could add a tubeless valve to the tank doofer and use a mini pump to pressurise it, then hey-presto - you get your pot filled double quick.
Whilst you’re modding the thing up you could also get a wee heating element in there - say off of a travel kettle - and use it as a travelling samovar or shower.
:-bd
