Do I want a riser bar?

Post by nagasaki45 »

Hi all!

Think the front of my bike is a bit too low for me. It's a sonder frontier in large, with the stock 780mm bar, and all spacers are already under the stem. I didn't check the height of the bars relative to the saddle but quite sure the saddle is higher than the bar. On long(-ish) rides I get some discomfort at the shoulders and lower back. Also, I often push the handlebar away, like not holding the grips but resting my palms on them to get 2-3cm more upright (hope this make sense, otherwise will add a picture). I don't have these issues with my commuter, that got an on one OG V2 on them, so tried to swap. The OG was terrible on the MTB. It moved the bars way too close to me, and it was also too narrow and made handling too floppy.

I'm not sure how to improve this. Thinking maybe a riser bar. Saw the Stooge Moto that Escape Goat is selling here on the forum, but not sure about the sweep as it might bring the bars closer which I don't like, based on the experiment with the OG. Maybe a longer stem with some rise instead?

Smart people of the forum, share your wisdom :-)

Sometimes a bar change will require the stem to also be changed in order to get things exactly where you want them. In this case, you might find that s stem swap to something slightly higher will do the trick.
May the bridges you burn light your way

Richey do a little riser stem. I've used one in the past. They're cheaper than a new bar if you shop around:

I think there was one on the bike I sold Shaf so he may still have one?

Thanks for the suggestion! According to this online calculator it will move the bars 12mm back and 28mm up. That sounds pretty much in the right direction. Now just to track one down... Watching one on an auction on ebay, and will message Shaf :-)

Nah ... get a riser bar. I don't know why, but I've found that "riser" stems with flat bars don't give the same feel as a riser bar. Perhaps because most of the flat bars I've used had very little sweep, while risers tend to have a tad more (unless you count Jones et al) and that does make a difference. I was a wide flat bar fanboy for years but have gone back to my riser roots, so to speak.

Now, I've got a set of 75ml rise Spark Skyscrapers in the shed if you want to give the extreme end of risers a go. Bought for my son who used them once to wheelie the length of our street before pronouncing them a bit too much. Where are you? You can borrow them for free or buy them for a £20 donation to Help For Heroes.

They're a thing of beauty

Found it... I think I hid it so as not to be traumatised by it's beauty...

Tom, let me know if it be any good to you and make me an ok-ish offer including postage. Are you close enough that I can drop it off in person?

All proceeds will just go straight to the Badou Jack Foundation... I believe he's on a mission to feed thousands of refugee kids daily

Have you looked at http://yojimg.net/bike/web_tools/stem.php for stem length
and https://whatbars.com/ for handlebar comparison.

I have found that an interchangeable set up works for me with a Selcof carbon bar for winter
and currently a Soma Dream Riser for those long warm summer rides - if only.
My initial reaction switching between bars was stem length but actually my current stem works with both.
Not sure what comes first stem or bars but worth running your set up through the stem comparison.
Zazen - nothing happens next this is it.

Sounds good! YGM :-)

Thanks for the suggestions everybody. Will try the stem first and see how it goes.

Cheers,
