Today We're Celebrating....

Post by MuddyPete »

Whilst looking for jolly japes, cracking wheezes and general excuses for silliness, Reg and I stumbled across this:

https://www.thereisadayforthat.com/calendars/2021/03

Forthcoming reasons to be cheerful include...

28 March = national black forest cake day in USA ๐Ÿฅง๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ˜‹

4 April = international carrot day ๐Ÿฅ•๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ˜‹...but only in UK ๐Ÿค”

6 April = INTERNATIONAL new beers eve!

In ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ, 12 April is national grilled cheese sandwich day, national liquorice day AND national Big Wind Day ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ˜ท๐Ÿคข.

17 April, Italy ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น = national espresso day โ˜•๐Ÿ˜‹...day of the dangle mug ๐Ÿ˜„.

1 May = international world naked gardening day ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿฆ”๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŒบ๐Ÿฅ€โœ‚๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ฌ.

There's plenty to do, just take your pick :d
May you always have tail wind.

Carrot Day could easily encompass 'Carrot Cake Day' :-bd

And toasted cheese and licorice mixed up is guaranteed to result in Big Wind Day

And the single most important day for fans of Douglas Adam's;

25th of May.
World towel day.

I do celebrate it with a tiny towel (when on a trip). Since the Highland Trail group start is round about then, I've some memories of sending mates photos with me and my towel during the event. Very spectacular.

Great news, my birthday falls on INTERNATIONAL CABERNET SAUVIGNON DAY, SLINKY DAY and NATIONAL TOASTED MARSHMALLOW DAY. Itโ€™s going to be wild :-bd

Years ago my brother and I had a wall calendar of wacky holidays like these, one particularly messy, well attended party was held in honour of Yak day. :-bd

A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-bogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you โ€” daft as a brush, but very very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitch hiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have "lost." What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

Hence a phrase that has passed into hitchhiking slang, as in "Hey, you sass that hoopy Ford Prefect? There's a frood who really knows where his towel is." (Sass: know, be aware of, meet, have sex with; hoopy: really together guy; frood: really amazingly together guy.)[3]

โ€”โ€‰Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

It's been a while since I read the book, so thanks for the reminder. Brilliant. I must have intuitively known this, as I always carry a tiny microfibre travel towel when bikepacking :-bd

I must be a hoopy frood 'cos I've still got my Don't Panic towel from way back. It doesn't come out very often. Still got vinyls and various other memorabilia too. There was a period when it went uncool to be into HHGTTG but his inventiveness and humour stands the test of time.

I had โ€˜Donโ€™t Panicโ€™ in large green friendly letters on my camper van, came in handy in far flung outposts of civilisation, in Croatia they called us the donโ€™t panic brothers.

Was hitchers really ever uncool? The books as well?
