I love paper maps. Always have. But having them digitised and easily available online has made a massive difference, especially using site like
https://maps.nls.uk/. Having the ability to overlay maps of different periods, to see how route lines have changed, settlements grown, rivers meandered, lochs grown or shrunk etc. help create a whole new understanding of what we currently see.
Also, a wee tale... many moons ago, when I was an ardent Munro bagger, I had a couple of remote Munros to climb, They are near Corrour and quite some distance from the road. Conventional wisdom and all the guidebooks suggested the early train to Corrour station, a quick march along the loch, up the two mountains, back down, a quick march back and the last train back out. It was only when looking at the map in the Anquet application that the access track to the north of the hills suddenly appeared to take you quite close. That track was on the adjacent sheet to the two Munros so you wouldn't necessarily have spotted it without the "seamless" view that the app gave you. As a result, my mate and I cycled in, did the two Munros, cycled back out and got back to the car around 2pm.
