Fargo with Jones Loops

Post by lune ranger »

Anyone running a Fargo with Loops?
The interweb is suggesting it’s a reasonable idea.
Does anyone have practical experience of this.
I was thinking of giving it a before I let my Fargo frame go. Maybe it’ll make a better all round bikepacking bike than my Krampus.
If you are going through hell, keep going.

@undertheradars does..
It looks awful, but it rides well.
As does the Fargo.
Apparently.

I’ve a Krampus with Jones bars, and it’s my go to bikepacking bike.

Although, to be fair, when I had a Fargo I had Woodchippers on it, so can’t advise on what it felt like with Jones bars..

i owned a fargo for a while, it was fitted with jones loops. i found it very comfy, moreso than the salsa woodchippers it came with.
i found my hands were never in the correct position with the wide drops.

and i dont give a monkey's what my bikes look like. comfort is my number one target when buying/building a bike.

Fargo is ugly whatever bars it has but as Tony says that’s not the point.
With the drops set at off road height I found I only had one properly usable hand position - in the hooks.
I think the XL frame is also a little too long for me even at 6’2”, the loops will bring things back a bit I reckon.
I’ll set it up and go for a ride sometime soon.
I’m also considering keeping the Krampus and trying it with normal sized 29er wheels for a bit of variation.

Ditto remarks about riding position but with a medium frame.

If you want to see Fargo builds with Loops then Keep Pedalling have some custom build photos.
Also have a look through TDF riders r1gs quite a few use this set up.
Guitar Ted also has reviews and thoughts on Fargo/Loops.

I was going to convert my Fargo then realised that it would include shifters, brake levers and callipers.
Matching shifters to FD and RD turned out not to be problem with Sram but if you have Shimano fitted it might.
Finally a new wider range cassette and new cables oh and grips.
All that and still riding a bike with too long a top tube - for my liking.
Zazen - nothing happens next this is it.

Tony - you get first dibs if/when I sell.

I don’t think I’ll need to spend anything to try it out as I have some wheels spare and all the other running gear is on the Krampus.

The front end geo on a fargo is similar to an original Jones frame so they work well. A mate ran hers with loops from a couple of months after buying it until she sold it (and bought a Jones!) She used it in all sorts of places and reckoned it was far better off road with the loops.
