Cairngorms Loop, sept /Oct okay?

Post by Asposium »

Looking to ride the Cairngorms loop in late September or early October.
Either on my own or with a friend over a week.
Is the route rideable this time of year?
Thinking mainly bracken and ticks.

Bracken and ticks will be less of a problem in late Sept/Oct than it is now. Midge numbers should be a lot lower, especially if we miss a 3rd hatch and/or we get a few colder nights.

I can't really see other problems other than the usual weather ones. I did it 20th Sept last year. Rivers were low, I had hardly a cloud all the way round. Other than a stonking headwind I'd say it was ideal.

Early snowfall can't be ruled out but it wouldn't persist.

I did it two year ago in the last week of September; I had 20c sun and blue skies the first day then freezing wind from Loch Builg then thick frost and snow when I stopped at Braemar campsite (thin ski gloves were appreciated).
