Hmm, I’d go happy valley, turn off at the top of the road climb onto the track that runs NW and drops down Nant Briach y rhiw to bryncrug. Follow the sustrans route up from Llanegrne over the top. Drop down towards Arthog but take the nice bridle way that cuts the corner at 245 140 (nice switch backs!) then bit of mawdach trail and over Barmouth bridge.

We haven't got the GR's yet JC ole mate  . Still, when has that ever mattered. Another vote for that 'nice bridleway' at Arthog - gotta concentrate though or you'll be off before you know it. For a more inland route via Corris and a remote cut through to Abergynolwyn have a look at the 3-dayer that Pickers and I did a couple of July's ago.

We went from Machynlleth to Barmouth as part of the BB300 last year. I'm not familiar with the area but the organiser was so I can only assume that route is the best available

Depends what bike and time you have, as I have heard Nant Briach y Rhiw is slow and rough, lots of walking.

Happy Valley to that point, then decide road/off-road. Either way, after that up to Llanegryn and over the stunning track above Fairbourne that takes you out onto the small road that leads to Cader Idris south side footpaths and eventually to Dolgellau. Hit the road, turn left and follow down to Arthog and over the bridge.

It is mountainbike terrain but it's a lovely old track. Recently it's had some of the biggest ruts sorted out and 4x4 traffic is now one way only.

That's exactly why I asked the question how I did rather than follow "that route"

Thanks all and thanks for the GPX Stuart
