nicest way to cross the central belt ?

heading south on either ncn7 or ncn1 i am looking for the quietest and nicest way to cross the central belt of scotland.

ideas greatly appreciated.

last weekend in september mike.
hired a car from leeds to inverness.
then riding back over 2 weeks, nice and steadily. we are camping.

got a couple of planned routes.
thinking ncn7 to milngavie, then canal across to twechar, then lanes south east-ish via shotts, forth and down to peebles.

This possibly isn't very relevant to cycling, but when I read Chris Townsend's "Along the Divide" where he walked the watershed of Scotland, he was pleasantly surprised by the Central Belt section. He hadn't been looking forward to it and expected it to be dull, but found that it wasn't.

Canal to Ingliston. Quiet roads and tracks to Currie. Over the Pentlands to Carlops, Romano Bridge, hills to Peebles, track to Innerleithen, then the B709 to Langholm.

TBF, the road from Carnwath to Peebles is quite nice in places. Good bakery in Carnwath too.

If you are passing through Shotts etc, choose your clothing colours carefully. Green, blue and orange should all be avoided
