Can’t mention surf/punk without a bit of Sublime,

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XINAJ7jgg6Y

one of my favourite bands. Was introduced to them at Deland dropzone in Florida, happy memories of drinking beer around a fire after a hard day of skydiving in the sun.

I used to play Santeria live, the final note on the bass is a slide which is the as the opening note of London calling, naturally we had to play that as well :-bd

The Surfragettes - ho, ho! I've got a great version of Penetration somewhere. Surf Raiders? Jon & The Nightriders? One of the two.

Right, I've got some more chips (betting, not from Shaf's gastank) and I'm back in the game after Techno nearly cleaned me out.

Surf punk you say? I've got two early 60's LP's by the Oz group The Atlantics, and here's the most eccentric track. I wouldn't say it's easy listening but it has a certain charm(?). It was way ahead of its time and many stations refused to play it. It's a sort of 'concept single' before anyone had thought of 'concept albums' (actually I lie, my vote for earliest concept album is Joe Meek's insanely rare 'I Hear A New World' of 1960. Fans of electronica - he is your godfather). Anyway, maybe only Steve and Techno will be able to handle it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8v_NjoIqcI .

The Atlantics are still going, with the addition of the highly skilled Martin Cilia.

Surf Punk and 60's (pre) punk ... I mentioned these to Reg previously. A series of albums called 'Pebbles'. Complilations of punk before there was punk. :-bd

Probably play LTJ Bukem more than any other though, Logical Progression, Earth, etc, etc...
You guys might be interested in this if you are into the old stuff.

Doc Scott recently put out this 1994-2001 remasted 31 Records release. Skip straight to "Shadow Boxing" for the reason to buy this. The whole thing is a chopped up breaks extravaganza as was the old skool style.

That takes me back :-bd The Eclipse / The Edge Coventry '93 - '95. Can't say it was the highlight of my club days tbh  Jungle was getting full of attitude and clubs had lost the atmosphere that pulled me in a few years before, but Randal, Doc Scott, DJ Hype, when it was good it was SO good. But I still relate the music to some of the shitty stuff I saw around that club. Unfair association but there all the same.

There were tunes like this though ... https://youtu.be/aCFKCpjPblU
That tingling intro and a whole room starting to bounce when the drums start, simple + effective.

Alternating between punk links and classic Jungle with some jazz in between, Friday Tunes in the office here sounds like a John Peel show.

Technoheads ... Gotta love some Dave Clarke? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8-Wg-LW2wU

It's partly just a bloody racket and partly headfirst into chaos, I love it. In fairly small doses. 90 mins of it is an endurance test. Saw him a couple of times at Sankeys and once at a big open air rave, 94 or 96, not sure now. Squeezed into a tent and a few minutes later he started bouncing 2 copies of Red 2 back and forth, didn't know if we were at a rave or in a mosh pit.

Now you're talking James!
His mixes from that era on the john peel show, are outstanding, cutting up the the shipping forecast was a nice trick too
His mixing is So tight he makes it sound easy, but it's bloody not.

That sounds a lot like my best memories of the orbit, joyful chaos!

I think that Red 3 was the first techno record I bought actually James.

Anyway, shameless plug time. Here's some similarly pounding techno but mixed in a much more pedestrian fashion by me: https://m.mixcloud.com/maily/its-getting-tougher/

Nice, had a scan through that mix... up later. The Dave Clarke Essential Mix 93 is an all time classic.

Youtube popped this up, techno perfected = https://youtu.be/eLtnhsLwSZE It kind of does almost nothing, but is so effective - youtube doesn't do it much justice though

Origin Unkown made a lot of good music then and was before Ram Records started pumping out generic jump up. I always found that "Truly One" spoke to me more than "Valley of the Shadows" in those moments of er.... empathetic euphoria  in the middle of a dance floor.

I always liked Techno, the hypnotic quality, but I never got into it. It's a genre I always think I want to know more about but never find the moment to make the step towards. I have a few mixes that I listen to sometimes and I guess that just satisfies the itch.

It's like any genre there's a ton of niches within techno. Maybe you've just not found the niche you click into.

Head front panel, Surgeon, inigo Kennedy, Neil Landstrumm, Paul birken, Regis, makaton, Oliver ho, d.a.v.e the drummer, Perc, blawan, are some of my favourite producers.

Good labels for me include djax-up-beats, downwards, rodz-konez, tresor, dynamic tension,......

Look for some Jerome hill mixes he's brilliant at pulling all different styles of techno and beyond together.

Techno m8, sorry to bring you back to the 60s, but I'm following up on Joe Meek again.

If you haven't investigated him before, I think you'd find the whole history fascinating. I bought the definitive book about him a while ago: https://www.abebooks.co.uk/book-search/ ... hn-repsch/. Kerist! £75 2nd-hand now! I seem to have a collector's item, bought it when it came out.

I have quite a large vinyl collection of his stuff, including a few rarities. He was arguably, no not arguably, he was, the first independent engineer/producer. He was obsessed by new sounds, using all sorts of home-grown electronics. Bear in mind this was 60 years ago. This concept album I was on about, there were very few copies made and one would be worth a fortune now. A CD is available. Here's a review: https://www.tinymixtapes.com/news/joe-m ... eration-of... "This release is a veritable time capsule, a reissue as a near-perfect distillation of Meek’s nameless genius, likely the closest we’ll ever get to his envisioned final product. I Hear a New World was a Sun Ra-style moment of interstellar clarity, a lassoing of the moon and stars put to magnetic tape that foresaw decades of psych music’s space worship. Sitting comfortably between Wilson’s SMiLE and the Forbidden Planet soundtrack, I Hear a New World is a seminal moment in both electronic music and avant-pop history; it’s about time we get to hear it in its unabridged, fully eccentric shape. This is something to be excited about".

In fact, I'm going to buy it right now, which I should have done when it came out (the re-issue, not the original 1960 one!!) https://www.cherryred.co.uk/product/i-h ... cd-boxset/. It's a massive bargain with all the other stuff on there: Oram, Fagandini, Ray Cathode (google him too!), Ferrari etc. I think you have to buy that CD Techno old sparrow. The review and description on cherryred is worth a read in its own right. Oh, seems there's a vinyl version too, so I should have bought that instead for the proper experience. Still, no reason can't have both  .

OK, sorry, back to "young persons popular music".....
