Veneto Trail can anyone help and feel free to tag along!
Going out on the 4th July seeing that travel restrictions have been lifted coming back the following Saturday from Manchester doing it at a social pace. Now is there any where to leave a bike box at the airport or can maybe give me a heads up on a bike shop that will give me another box or let me leave my original one there.
Also anyone got a GPX of last years route

Can't help with the route sorry and not planning on going but will be interested to hear how it goes. To be honest I didn't expect Italy to be opening up to tourism so soon, was keeping an eye on things with the TNR in mind - but as that's a mass gathering thing at the start I was working on it not happening this year. Good luck and enjoy it, looks like a great ride.

A bit of googling resulted in this:

We were set for a climbing trip to Cortina in July. I'd written it off in my head, so will be interested to know how you get on

Re: Veneto Trail can anyone help and feel free to tag along!
I read that the Italian borders are opening on June 3rd and bars/restaurants from today I think.
I'm stuck in wood school until the tail end of July but I'll be heading to do both the Veneto Gravel route and the Tuscany Trail route just as soon as Mrs Gairy says I can
Will you not have to self-isolate for two weeks upon return to the UK though???

I'll start by saying (a) I'm slightly cynical and (b) don't blame you Rich, if you're allowed then why not .... Now, given that Rich will be able to travel to an airport, catch a plane, cycle round Italy then come home and given that someone from London (no, I'm not picking on you) can jump in a car and head for the Peak / Lake district, can anyone tell me WTF the last couple of months have all been for?
May the bridges you burn light your way

Good question Stu, hence my tirade on the 'close up' thread We've all been stuck at home and are now stressing on whether to do a bivvy, but you can still fly anywhere in the world if you can find a flight.....Bearbonesnorm wrote: ↑Mon May 18, 2020 4:17 pm I'll start by saying (a) I'm slightly cynical and (b) don't blame you Rich, if you're allowed then why not .... It may make sense to someone, but not me.....
To the OP - good luck!

Aye and I'm still only allowed out twice a day and close to home for exercise and no driving unless it's for essential suppliesGood question Stu, hence my tirade on the 'close up' thread We've all been stuck at home and are now stressing on whether to do a bivvy, but you can still fly anywhere in the world if you can find a flight.....

Without wanting to derail the other thread, they have needed to slam the brakes on, as it was spreading at an ever increasing rate and wasn’t far off getting out of control.
Unfortunately it’s mostly affecting those with underlying health conditions. Generally the elderly and those in deprived areas, which Wales has quite quite a number of those groups, linked to the old industrial areas within the Southern/Northern Valleys.
(Similar issues in the rest of the country in places like Barrow, Middlesbrough, etc...)
Because of the way the devolved administrations work, Wales have chosen to keep things locked down, due to the above issues, and you’re stuck in the middle.
It was a case of sh1t!, slam on the brakes, then scrabble around for a while, until things could be brought under control.
If that hadn’t have happened, a large number of vulnerable people wouldn’t have had access to health services and the death numbers would be far higher than they are now.
It seems like we may be getting there, so there’s the slow relaxation of things. By July we may be able to travel overseas.
(I’m sure we all have different views on this, but we should have a clearer picture on this by the end of the month, once the affects of England relaxing the rules at the start of the month are known)
Imagine Rich is going with Ryanair, so it will be interesting to see which routes they can/will operate and If the hassle/hoop jumping/Russian roulette of regs will be worth the hassle

I hasten to add my flights were booked months ago but I changed the date from the Tuesday to Saturday seeing that the Jennride is no longer going ahead! I think things will have moved on a lot from what we are currently under. I,ve missed out on the Italy Divide and they are refusing to refund me but flights have been refunded going out Jet2 but Ryan Air dragging their heels on a refund.

Re: Veneto Trail can anyone help and feel free to tag along!
I get all that Chew but given the apparent state of things just this time last week, policy seems to have taken quite a swift detour and it makes me wonder whether we could have achieved the same things without full on lock-down ... but I suppose we'll never know.
Sorry Rich. As you were everybody.

FWIW, I got a couple of emails over the weekend from Ryanair for flights 30th May/6th June that just needed me to click a couple of boxes for a refund. I think they're processing them in date order.postierich wrote: ↑Mon May 18, 2020 6:40 pm I hasten to add my flights were booked months ago but I changed the date from the Tuesday to Saturday seeing that the Jennride is no longer going ahead! Re: Veneto Trail can anyone help and feel free to tag along!
Mrs PB has long standing return flights from Alicante to Newquay as she needs to visit her mother who, at the time of booking, was living independantly at home but is now in care and been diagnosed with dementia. The dates are 1st-5th of July but the new Ryanair schedule doesn't list flights on those days, guess we'll be getting a similar email soon. She's not very confident of actually being allowed to see her even if she does fly.

How Mrs PB is able to fly !
Obviously everything hangs on if the flights fly and the government ok flights abroad I,m just anticipation things as they seem to be improving nothing lost if I have everything in place.

It's poor form from the organisers not to offer some sort of refund. I see tuscany trail have been the same if people couldn't make the rescheduled date. Ive done both events in the past but this puts me off doing in the future as they have obviously just turned into big money making events.postierich wrote: ↑Mon May 18, 2020 6:40 pm I hasten to add my flights were booked months ago but I changed the date from the Tuesday to Saturday seeing that the Jennride is no longer going ahead! Re: Veneto Trail can anyone help and feel free to tag along!
Rich, doesn’t this make a mockery of your stated reasons for cancelling Jenn Ride?
Re: Veneto Trail can anyone help and feel free to tag along!
The Veneto trail group start is cancelled, I think Rich is just riding the route on his own so easy to social distance.
The Jenn Ride is an event which counts as a 'gathering' so not currently permitted in the uk, which is a shame as I was really looking forward to it I fear that ssuk may yet be cancelled as I can't see the restrictions on gatherings being lifted anytime soon.

Re: Veneto Trail can anyone help and feel free to tag along!
But doesn't travelling even if the ride itself is alone, not mean being part of mass gatherings at airport, and being inside a 8m wide plane?
My concern is that the strain in UK is supposedly different to that in China, which is different to that in US, so we have a virus that has mutated multiple times already, with international travel, and a Government who has not had testing at airports nor any period of quarantine at all for those coming, is that there will be a mixing of the various strains. In the same way a flu jab protects you from the most recent common strains of flu that year, if we don't test properly, don't trace properly and leave the borders very porous to people coming and out, even if we do get a vaccine to the most common strains here, then international travel can only expose us greatly, or am i overthinking it?

Re: Veneto Trail can anyone help and feel free to tag along!
If this is the case and the vaccine needs to be tailored to the location strain then that's a whole new level of disruption to travel from now on? And how does the virus know which country it's in? We could end up with a different strain in Wales to England so extrapolating that out we could face a situation where free travel even within the uk is no longer an option?
Yes/No/Maybe? On of the issues with the lock-down is it gives more time for thinking. We can only wait and see and hope for the best.

Re: Veneto Trail can anyone help and feel free to tag along!
They have stated that the virus seemingly is more virulent in Italy and the UK, to the strain in the US despite their higher death toll, they have stated that the european strain and US/China strains are different too, part of the reason viruses are so dangerous and difficult to vaccinate for, is their ability to mutate and this COVID19 is particularly bad.
This has been part of the concern over "herd immunity" is that there have been cases in China of people having the virus a second time, if you're relying on heard immunity, you don't want people to be able to catch it a second time especially without a vaccine and where the virus may be a different strain again. Any movement of people, especially internationally can only exacerbate this.
if you can have a vaccine that covers the most common strains only then can herd immunity work.

Re: Veneto Trail can anyone help and feel free to tag along!
Sorry, maybe is should call Rich out So directly? If the choice was to do a big adventure in the UK, that would be a best of luck enjoy.
I think it’s the (to me) seemingly unnecessary travel.
Though I do have to admit that I’m being a bit hypocritical as we (Helen & I) went to Canada early March before it all properly kicked off with the intention of heading up to Whistler the second week for some skiing, but came home early as Whistler shut down and travel was getting increasingly difficult.
In hindsight we possibly shouldn’t have gone as we knew it could have been a wasted trip and that Helen has an increased health risk, but we were spurred on by having invested quite a bit of money in the trip with no route to an insurance claim unless there were travel bans in place.
We’ve been hiding at home since we got back (just over a week before lockdown). I’ve been out a couple of times to the pharmacy and managed to get for a ride the other day, Helen’s been out twice - hospital for a blood test and just now we got back from a walk. We walked just over 3km but it wasn’t the most relaxing experience as Helen was pretty anxious when we had to pass other people. Despite that I think it helped as an escape fro the house was needed.
I’m normally pretty blasé/“it’ll be alright!” about things, but this time I’m definitely more cautious and conscious about the situation.
Maybe it’ll all be good in another 6 weeks?
Anyway I’m still hopeful I’ll get to SSUK if it’s on and looking forward to Jenn Ride 2021.

Re: Veneto Trail can anyone help and feel free to tag along!
In my eyes not at all!! people need to protect themselves and the people they hold dear to themselves.
Italy wants the tourists back as far as I can see and if they let me in I will come. Plan is to ride outside eat outside drink beer outside wash outside sleep outside. Had a belly full of people telling me what I should do in this country whilst I have worked every day since this Pandemic started delivery tat! Might sound harsh but people need to protect themselves this is going to keep going on for a long time yet. Upset a few people locally with my actions whilst doing what I love at zero risk to anyone else. I,ve never preached to anyone and certainly don't like being taken for a mug like the Italy Divide organiser who keeps throwing it back at me you can sell your place.
