Atlas Mountain Race.

Post by Bearbonesnorm »

Looks very similar to the Silk Road with regard to how it's run (maybe the same folk?) Anyway, I always fancied Morocco as I imagine many people have.

i liked the look of it and fncied giving it a go. but a few people have been putting doughts in my mind with regards to the safety in the area.
they sent me this link.
i know it happens everywhere but if these types get wind that a lot of western tourists are in their area on there own how easy would it be to pick them off especially if they used the tracking site??
got me giving it more thought anyway.

Event is of no interest to me as I'm way too slow to complete it in 7days ,but I have travelled through north Africa , sometimes on treks spent a good while with work there and found 90% of the people grand ,the morrocans in city's can be a bit ropey ,daughters got chased through the souk in Marrakech but ,she's also had run ins in Liverpool Birmingham and London ,there's extremists all over our world ,when living in Spain E.T.A planted lunch box bombs on my local beach and blew up a restaurant in the town ,my wife got caught in the Dublin pub bombings back in the 70s ,I know we have to be careful of our surroundings but I've never stopped my daughter's traveling around Africa and Asia as that is bowing to the minority , as I said in another thread when your times come it's come so enjoy whilst you can

So the same as the SRMR then?

We get a bunch of (like-minded) folk together and ride the route in a sociable, fun and non-competitive way - simples!

I remember there was a few of us, (Chew as well?) talking about this a few years ago. Didn't we even get some dates pencilled? Am I remembering this right?
Things are kinda hazy for me from that period... :|

That was an interesting thought to contemplate Stu.

I'll bet their personal hygiene is, mm, somewhat of an improvement on ours though  .

"all sleep in a big tent".... now there's a thought for a BBB event......

I did the route of caravans last April. I highly recommend Morocco on so many levels. The people were incredibly kind and diverse. The scenery varied and epic. The food was brilliant. And you can get 4g reception anywhere better than London.

Plenty of familiar names from endurance circles. Besides 'our' boys I have also met Mike Sheldrake, Chris Phillipps and Rudy Rollenberg a few times and Jason Black seemed a nice guy wen I met him briefly in Ireland last year. Nelson looks to be putting on another good race.
