So, those cheap On-One helmets

Post by Cheeky Monkey »

So, in my search for a new helmet to fit my odd noggin (and my vanity to a certain extent) I tried a couple of the cheap On Ones, this:

and this:

So, the first one has the oddest fit of any helmet I've ever tried. Maybe it's a round fitting and my head is more elliptical but all done up all I had to do was brush the front and it seems to pop off. Fair enough, heads are all different so I'll just return it.

The second has holes and two pins either side of the visor to fit it. The holes are either too close together or pins too far apart that they don't marry up so it can't be installed. Pfft. Shame as it at least fitted better.

Guess not much of a surprise given price and brand. Anyone else experienced similar?

So, what helmet for a bloke who finds a large Met Kaos a good fit?

Not tried one but did read something the other week about a few folk having the straps part company in the event of a crash.

I read one report of that, I think on a Gravel FB Group, cannae mind the name.

The strap wasn't continuous, looped through the helmet inside, but a left strap and a right strap, which detached

Another large Met Kaos?

I say this as I have trouble finding helmets that fit me well. I currently wear a Mavic but the model has been discontinued. The inner padding was getting scruffy but I was loath to replace it as it fits so well. I managed to track down a replacement pad set for another model but which is identical to the ones in mine

So if you've found a helmet that fits well then stick with that model or try other helmets from the same brand?

Fox Flux and TLD A2 seem to fit my odd shaped head.
Giro's used to fit, but not any more.

I've got a Carnac Quartz and a Croix SE. They fit me better than my Kask helmets do, which in-turn suit me better than Giro.

The last time I crashed and my head hit the ground was an OTB in err, 2001 so I can't tell you much about how good/bad these lids are in that respect!

Tried one of the On-One helmets a while back and found the same thing. I have an oval shaped head, it didn't fit, way too tight front to back, and way too loose at the sides. So I bought a Smith MIPS helmet cheap in a sale, which I wouldn't buy again as it's on the heavy side.

Interesting thought. Given their age I expected they'd be discontinued and all stock long gone but it seems girlgearuk might have them in white and a rather fetching blue.

Could be worse, the only helemets that ever fit me are bell/661/giro -63cm versions, nothing else gets even halfway over my head!

I'm forever paranoid that that they will change the mould.

I've recently bought a (half price in the sales) Troy Lee Designs helmet that fits my oversized nut. If anything it's an even better fit than my 10 year old Giro, in that I can actually use it with the internal padding rather than having to strip it out before it'll fit on my head.

i've had the enduro helmet from On-One and as with others, it's a weird shape and fit and only just big enough. Ended up getting a Bontrager quantum MIPS helmet from a friend (for free!) and that feels much nicer, and more room for my 61cm head.

I bought 2 helmets in the on one deal, and i thought it was good as brand helmet prices seem silly. But i'd not do it again I don't think, based on fit of the enduro helmet, and poor quality of foam padding and straps on the road one. I'm assuming the safety is OK, but something that is comfortable, ok to look at, lasts well, is really all i'm after.

The fit between the two was quite different, with the second (green) one being much better. Shame it doesn't seem to fit together

I have a couple of Carnac (Planet X) road helmets. Basic but comfy and as I’m confident they’re as safe as anything similar if you adjust and wear them properly.

Yeah, I couldn't resist a Croix for a tenner either and I really like it so far. Light, super comfy and well vented. Crashworthiness? Dunno but it's certified to the same standard as my other (expensive) lids so hopefully okay. :-S
