Discovered that what I thought was a broken pedal was actually 'just' the pedal stripping out the thread on the crank. Drive side too so probably need new cranks for the mountain bike.

Had the bromnie on the stand to true the front wheel after some idiot ran it over, luckily I ....errr....he pulled away slowly so just a tweaked front rim . 10 minutes and good as new. Knew the wheel building practice would come in handy :-bd

Also cleaned the rims and aligned the pads, not had to do that for some time.

Replaced the gear cables on Cath's road bike. All was going well until I needed to tape the cable outers to the handlebars - could I find my roll of electrical tape? Could I ****!

Down to the hardware store in the village to grab a couple of rolls of same (75p per roll  ) only to find on the way back up the hill that the indexing on my winter bike's gearing was out. So once I'd sorted Cath's gears I had that to do

Mud tyres onto the mountain bike just now.

Commuter/gravel/cx bike will hopefully be getting a clean, oil, sort the rattling internal cables and mudguard fitting later this weekend.

As Lazarus' post said, getting ready for winter!

Things left to fettle:

Tyres
Brakes

Then bring on the muddy funsters!

Related to the winterising theme, I built up
a dynamo front wheel for the commuter last night. I got Roger Musson’s wheel building guide a while back and followed it to the letter - pleased with the result, but I’ve not ridden on it yet :???:

I'm self taught from Musson's book and all the wheels I've built have never needed touching once finished. Occasionally I'll give the spokes a pluck to listen to the tone to check the tension and they are all still even  I'd say if you've followed the book exactly you can't fail to end up with a good wheel.

As to my bike, I've fitted new tyres, changed the bb bearings and freehub bearings, swapped the saddle back to the Brooks, fitted new brake pads front and rear (ready for the descent you've warned us of) and changed the gear ratio ready for the climbs.

I normally run 34/18 and for last years BB300 I dropped it to 34/20. In my mind I think this will make it effortless to ride. Went on a quick 4 mile ride from home to bed the pads in, there's a 16% descent near me that's just right for some hard stops. When I turned to ride back up I was disappointed that even with the lower gear it still required some effort to get up, this happens every time I change the ratio so you'd think I'd have worked out by now that it's just 2 more teeth on a cog, not a motor

Single speed ratios are a funny thing; fit a lighter gear and it seems just as hard, but you go slower :???:
32:19 was always my choice for Wales, loaded or otherwise- didn’t seem to make any difference.

I'd seen that on one of your BB200 write-ups which is how I arrived at 34/20 last year, was just right so thank-you for that  34/20 is just under 1% higher than 32/19. 19t and 20t surley cogs are the same price but 34t oval chainring were £10 cheaper than 32t. I thought I'd suffer the higher gear to save that

I assume the 32t is more expensive as that's the most popular size when used with 1x10 setups.

Fitted a redshift shock stop stem (30degree one) to my genesis vapour in an attempt to manage my poor old wrists (osteoarthritis). 38mm gravel kings and new pads too.

Felt pretty good on a quick spin around the village and bits of rough track. Time will tell...

My first solo lowers service (always relied on more competent support, don't know why but forks make me nervous) - pepped up my 6 month old McQueen hlr from the Sherpa. Remarkably clean wipers after a hard last couple of months in the calderdale glaur.
Hey frog at 'farriers, just seen your post, hope the shifter is good!

Handed my notice in today from my current crane hire employer. which it too far and unsafe to do a regular cycle commute. I did it about 5 times all year this year

My new crane hire company that I'm moving to shortly is 3.5 miles away and is only 4 to 5 minutes slower to ride to rather than drive to.

It's going to save me £40 to £50 in fuel a month and get me back on the bike much more often on canal paths and cycle ways. plus it's 4 more days holiday each year :-bd

Fitted a carbon bar I had lying around in the garage to the fatbike. Mostly still trying hand positions etc before deciding whether or not I want Loops again. Should be a bit less cold in the winter and shaved another 90g off the weight. With that and tubeless, I've shed almost 900g now. Total weight is now down to 13.25kg (29.2 lbs.) with the carbon forks.
