Bottle cage mount repositioners

Post by composite »

I have a partial frame bag that fits perfectly on my CX bike, to still allow me to use both bottle cages. Thought I would see how it fits on my 29er and unfortunately it's just slightly the wrong shape meaning I can't use the bottle cage. There is plenty of room to move the cage lower on the downtube but clearly, I need a repositioner.

Came across this one by Top Peak https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/bottles-cag ... ge-mounts/ and this one https://www.wolftoothcomponents.com/col ... 1000375331 from Wolftooth. I think the adjustable Wolftooth is a better option but just wondered if anyone had any experience to share, of using this sort of thing.

I have a couple of the longest Wolf Tooth ones and a bunch of the accessories that go with them.
They are imo really good, functional bits of kit and very versatile. Pretty expensive though.
If you are going through hell, keep going.

I’ve got a couple of the smallest ones - they allow me to lower my bottle cages just enough to clear my partial frame bag on both bikes.

The king cage / wolf tooth morse cages look intriguing too

I have a Passport branded version, it was about a tenner from SJS iirc. Does the job although it's not currently on any of my bikes.

Be aware they will also move the cages slightly further into the triangle as well, although this is probably not an issue... on my frame the clearance is such that there is not room for a repositionner. If there was I'd drop the rear cage to get a larger bottle in.

Image

The two cages are so close together that with the side entry cages I have to take the front bottle out to be able to get the rear bottle out  This is a large frame. On the plus side it does mean the rear bottle can't fall out.

I just checked and my Passport branded one came from Triton not SJS. The shop formerly known as Charlie's also has them. https://www.bikemonger.co.uk/passport-c ... 3545-p.asp

I needed to do this on a small road bike frame a while ago. Piece of alloy bar about 10mm wide x 3 or 4 thk, maybe 150mm long (cut to size...). Drill and countersink holes to match holes on the frame, drill and tap holes in the new locations for your cage. Pennies. But no photo, sorry.

I've done the same as above, but to space the bottle down by the distance between the bottle mounts... Just a piece of 10x3 aluminium strip with 2 plain holes (over the existing bottle mounts) and a third tapped hole for the new bottom mount. Took all of about 5 minutes, including rounding off corners and de-burring the holes.

Think I'm out of aluminium strip, but can knock one up out of steel if you're stuck

If you want to myog adapter and live anywhere near b/ham wolves let me know I've got quite a bit of ally strips ,it comes in meter length hence can't post ,3 mm thick BUT about 25 mm wide so will need trimming ,I borrowed it from work for a little project but have a lot left over ,yours free if you can collect or meet locally

I'd like to add a bottle cage to by down tube (Ti frame). I've got the halfords band things just curious as to whether I could drill and use rivnuts?

I use these

https://www.tredz.co.uk/.Topeak-Alt-Pos ... 127676.htm

They can be bent a bit too to follow the curve of the down tube.

I'm in Birmingham and I like the idea of making something to solve this as on the surface it looks like a relatively simple thing to do but I lack the tools for trimming the sheet and tapping threads. I very much appreciate the offer though, it's very kind.

Not brave enough. Does the fact that the frame is carbon make any difference by the way?

Thanks for all the responses all, there are quite a few options there to choose from.

Give me the dimensions you want and I'll get them cut and tapped(think they are 5mm but will check ) and drop them over, only work opposite the Albion ground so can turn left on the cut into Brum after work if you wanted :-bd

Just be careful which ones you select (e.g. https://www.gesipa.co.uk/products/blind ... lications/) - I thought that's what they were on carbon frames - certainly looked like them on the frames I've come across.

^ Your call, but a rivnut designed to fit carbon sheet isn't the same as it being OK to drill (ie cut, splinteringly and potentially start delamination in) fibres in a loaded frame tube. There's a fair bit of twist load in a down or seat tube under pedalling, enough to potentially cause problems at a cut hole.

I genuinely worry about how complacent people can be with carbon these days  There's an assumption it's simply strong. It can be...

Ah I see your point! With bikes designed to such close tolerances these days, and I guess with CF you can design all the weave etc. to absolute optimums, any extra hole is gonna be a weak point, although a correctly drilled hole with a properly bonded rivnut I'd expect to work quite well - and certainly better than a certain bike frame I had from the manufacturer made of alu where they punched random holes in it to suddenly accommodate DI2... (cracked after 6k miles around a design flaw, as opposed to the version 1 design that managed 35-40k miles where it cracked around the bottom bracket due to fatigue).

I think you could do it Zippy, technically you're a bit more competent than most. Although the OPs avatar, 'Composite' .. he's possibly a BAE carbon engineer who's laughing at my kid-gloves approach to black magic frames

I have some elite cage strap type things on my Solaris to put a second cage on, only comes with one as standard

I've used the same plastic straps for years now, have survived everything. The straps were about £3. Quite amazing how well they've worked really, and they've let me put the bottle in the perfect place to still allow a half frame bag

I had to use a mount something adjuster on my downtube bottle cage mount
