3491 ft bivvy

Post by summittoppler »

I know some of these pics are in the BAM thread but I thought I'd stick it as a post on its own...

After riding with Allen (Escape Goat) for the first time way back in January on the BB Winter Event, he asked me on a few occasions if I'd show him a route in Snowdonia and take in a bivvy. So I dipped into the 'Summittoppler book of mtb' routes and delivered this beauty on Friday/Saturday.

A bit breezy late afternoon had me thinking of a plan B but it wasn't needed as the wind soon died down.

The destination was Carnedd Llewellyn which stands at 3491 feet and is Wales's 2nd highest peak.
Typically its the one in the cloud...

The going was tough as we had a fair bit of hike a bike to do :-bd Good training for Allen's BB200 :-bd

A bit of entertainment on the way up

As we got nearer the summit the cloud was continuing to make an appearance which would have hampered our chance of a good sunset view

Had a ridiculous amount of fun in your back garden, thanks so much. Maybe next time I wont rush my chippy down me and it may be a touch less windy.

Didn't really set out to make a little video, but I threw a couple of pictures and small clips for a 3 minute long video;

Thanks Jeff, I had an absolute blast... I've since been thinking of something rather silly involving those lumps out there...

Just so retro to use feet

I'm sure we've both been outdone already. The rules are it must include a bike though. Right?

My last bivy was at about 2700 m.a.s.l. Seems a bit unfair where I live. Next bivy (in a couple of days) could be at about 3000 m.a.s.l if my mate is happy with it.

You may want to make it a UK only competition.

Yeah... I can be quite foreseeable. Bit boring in a way...
To compensate for being somewhat boring, Jeff gave me a little idea for a challenge.

Rules
- during bikepacking trip of (off course) at least 2 days/1 night.
- bivy spot reached by bike. Unsupported.
- at least 4 h (?) riding/pushing/carrying to get there. 8 h?
- special drink to be enjoyed? Free choice of drinks, but it needs to be one of your favourites and one you think you should enjoy more outdoors.
- must face sunset or sunrise or, best, both.
- no closed shelter allowed. No tarp, no tarp tent, just an open bivy - the star gazing type.

Any other ideas?

The altitude bivybike challenge.
AyeBeeSee...
I'm (hopefully) going to start with it this weekend :-bd

Edit: added the last, harsh rule
Edit 2:

Open for any sorts of discussions and ideas

I like this! :-bd

How about adding up the heights during the course of the challenge? So on June 21st I was at 2411 feet, July 26th at 3491 ft and last weekend at 2985 ft which is (calculator needed) 8887 feet and all in a Hunka.

Hmm, this cold evolve....

Good stuff :-bd
Added altitude. Me likes
I'll start logging the nights out in that fashion.
The higher the number, the better.

'Cause it may take us to places with a better view, perhaps go a little beyond where we would usually camp and give more intensive moments.

That gets me thinking about water transport. How was it up on Carnedd Llewellyn? What did you carry up in terms of water?
Any 'binge drinking' at the potentially last water source?

I remember going down to Öskjuvatn over sketchy lava in the Askja crater when hiking across Iceland, knowing the next reliable source is some 90 km away. Then playing with pumice in water like a little kid - fancy rocks swimming on water. And drinking as much as I could of the superbly tasting mineral water and filling my platy's for the next 30 h or so towards Gæsavötn.

I'm not called Summittopler for nothing

For the Llewellyn bivvy I carried two 500ml bottles of water and a 1 litre in the stem cell. I also had one Stella up there too! Ended up up giving Al one of 500mls in the morning. I don't usually drink much when out.
There's no natural spring up on the tops but I always take a filter with me when ever I'm out as you never know...
I do my binge drinking during the week

There are a few of us on here who have biked in Nepal. So when the heights get over 4000m we can start the competition.

I'm off to Chile and Argentina in November and December and hopefully will find some bivy spots in thin air.

We could also have a low altitude challenge. So to make it fair for all, how about the lowest cumulative altitude bivvies? Beach bivvies in the dunes wins!

Do we need a separate thread for this? I've never had so many comments on a thread of mine
