Magnetic Charging Cables

Post by sean_iow »

I saw these mentioned on an audax fb page and thought they might be of interest

Unfortunately they don't have the correct plug for my garmin but I would assume a bit of searching might find a supplier of a magnetic cable with the correct plug.

The adapter bit goes in the port on the device and the charge cable is only held onto the adapter by magets, same system as used on mac books. It means if you catch the cable or it gets pulled the magnets allow the cable to release without putting strain on the socket on the device.

Plus, with the port always filled with the adapter, there's less concern about it getting filled with crap / water.

They look good, I saw ones that pivot the other day too: https://www.amazon.co.uk/UGI-Charger-Ma ... 4462&psc=1#
That's not actually the one I saw but you get the idea

Makes me wonder about hot melt glue-gunning something magnetic like this into my Garmin port permanently. I'd probably f it up but it's a good waterproofing idea  and less risk of riding into a ditch as I try to plug it in..

I used Sugru to attach a cable permanently into my old Edge 800.

Yeah, could definitely work. As long as it's not a super permanent glue, just in case!

Do they handle data as well as charge? Wouldn’t want to attach one permanently if not.

The first one doesn't, but the second one seems to...
Type: Charging & Data Sync Cable
Product features: charging + data transmission
Would be easy enough to try.

Edit - lol, apparently that second one is "intimate and practical". Nice!

I've been using them for several months now, not that brand but qprods from Amazon. There work really well and easpcailly for work cycling where you are plugging and unplugging all day long they are so much better. On my last work phone the usb port broke due to the constant plugging and unplugging so that was the reason I got them. I now have 4 sets and use them on two mobiles, the garmin (which had a loose usb port but is fine with the magnetic plug) a kindle and the usb port pack on the bike.
