Joytech RCC Rear Hub Longevity?
Washed my Genesis Longitude down yesterday and gently hose rinsed it then went for a ride today. What a racket from the rear hub, constant creaking and cracking. I checked the net to see how to service them which looks easy but not a single water seal in sight that I noticed. Any experience of longevity on these hubs?
I'll be stripping mine down tomorrow and no more hose rinsing in that area!

Probably just fitted with very cheap bearings Ray. Pop a decent set in and all should be fine.

Cup and cone going by what I saw on the net. How easy would it be to get decent replacements?

Sorry Ray, I simply assumed that they would be cartridge. Never needed to replace cup and cone, so no real idea as to whether higher spec bearings are available but if there's no seals on the hub, I'm not sure I'd fit anything other than whatever I can find.

If there is putting on the cup/cone then nothing you can do will make the hub run smooth.
If they are still ok then you are going to have to fill up with grease and service the hub after pretty much every set and muddy ride.
As Stu says I think in this circumstance any balls will do

Well that's sorted. 50 minute job but could have been done in 40 as I spent 10 minutes trying to loosen the cassette locking but whoever put that on has overtightened it. Access to the bearings was easy and it all went very smoothly (for a change). Only the disc side needed attention which is only protected by a single rubber o ring so I'll be more careful with the hose the next time.
Re: Joytech RCC Rear Hub Longevity?
I have a Genesis Day One that I use for commuting. It had a Joytech singlespeed cassette hub. Not the same model as yours but the description sounds very similar - not properly sealed. I got fed up with servicing the cup and cone bearings every couple of months and rebuilt the wheel round a decent cartridge bearing hub. Not touched the hub in probably 7k miles, bearings still smooth.
This was with use mostly on the road, so off-road would obviously be worse.

^^^, yes, I'm definitely thinking of that as a long term solution.
Re: Joytech RCC Rear Hub Longevity?
Does it not make more sese to wait and see if the hub/bearings actually break rather than just replace it for sealed?
It took me about 1/3 of the time to sort out my cup and cone as it did to bash out the bearings for my sealed bearing hub i was also servincing [ much younger and less miles].
Oh and they fit sealed bearing - just like they fit press fit BB - as its faster on the production line and therefore saves them money rather than because it is necessarily a superior ssytem.
yet to touch the rear wheel on My Genesis
Absolutely not my experience Cup and cone does get some abuse from the interent but having just serviced mine [ Winter SS bike so gets the worst of the weather and the worst of looking after] for the second time in ten years and they were all fine with no pitting.service the hub after pretty much every set and muddy ride.

Re: Joytech RCC Rear Hub Longevity?
Lazarus, I think you misunderstand me.
I’m a fan of well sealed cup/cone bearings.
My old Shimano hubs would last forever if services a few times a year.
And yes it’s a simple job and imo a satisfying one as well.
My comment was to do with an unsealed/poorly sealed bearing - of any sort really.

I think you may have mis understood me too. I'll only replace the hub if water ingress is a regular problem.
Re: Joytech RCC Rear Hub Longevity?
I agree with that [ re sealing] and sorry for the misunderstanding - might bother to check mine tonight to see hwo well or poorly they are selaed
