What harness
After my first proper bike packing trip on the WRT my main concern was the bar bag positioning on my cables to which I managed to get through without to much mither tbh, I'm now in the process of looking at bikes more suited to bike packing rather than using a xc race bike but with a house move on the cards in the coming weeks/months I cant see this happening right now so which harnesses are people using to move the bar bag away from the cables area?? and also noticed a few bikes over the weekend with foam blocks situated around the bars any info on these would be great to as I may have to use this bike a few more times before I land something else. Or use my retro Gary Fisher 26er, Thanks in advance

Revelate Harness. Comes with foam spacers attached into the strapping points.
Don't discount the possibility of having to adjust cable/hose length regardless.

Re: What harness
Assuming you are using Shimano brakes the hoses come out of the levers at an angle away from the bars that interferes with harnesses. The hoses on Hope brakes exit the levers parallel to the bars so don't foul in the same way. Don't know about SRAM or Hayes.

Re: What harness
Yeah the Revelate harness looks a good'n and yes they are Shimano brakes, may have to go with the Retro mtb after all then which don't get me wrong is a great bike to ride although I've not tried loaded up, Once the house move is out the way I'll sort somet out with right set up to conquer this issue in form of another bike

Re: What harness
Sorry to butt in, Those recommending the revelate harness. Will it work OK with a small dry bag. Like a 5L Alpkit one. i don't carry much up front generally.

Re: What harness
Should work just fine. It cinches up really small. I often use a 13L Alpkit bag but it's nowhere near full. I use it because it fits between the drops on my Woodchippers better. It's an Airlock Xtra so the Revelate straps go through one of the wee carry loops too. Stops it shifting any.
I think I have a smaller Alpkit bag in the garage. If I can remember tomorrow I'll load it up and see how it is.
Re: What harness
Thats awfully nice of you, much appreciated
Re: What harness
Revelate harness here too, its ace
Re: What harness
i have used the alpkit one - its fine in use - and can hold much more than the one below- did not foul the wheel on suspension forks
Generally i just use my apidura bag* though - IME its stable as can be when in use and only remove it for my larger winter sleeping bag and air bed.
I also have confusious bars and you can strap easily to that as well- guess it depends hwo much you want to pay and what you want as an outcome

Re: What harness
I got a Specialized Burabura harness recently and have to admit to liking it a lot. It uses a pair of aluminium brackets to hold the harness well clear of the bars. It accommodates a wide range of bags and is very well made. I’ve carried a 13l dry bag down to just a waterproof in it and it works equally well with either. Think it’s rated up to 20l.
I probably never would have considered it as an option but my lbs had them on sale after Christmas and I happened to be passing...
Ortlieb bar rolls also have a good system for pushing the bag out from the bar with foam spacers but it is a complete bag rather than a harness and packing/unpacking is a bit of a faff ime.

I'm hoping to get one
Trying to ride bikes.
Re: What harness
I’ve got a sweetroll for sale.
But mainly because I could never get it set up to clear the bars properly. Now got a salsa anything cradle.

Re: What harness
As promised..
Couldn't find the smaller Alpkit bug but used a 5L Exped drybag instead. TBH the yellow colour makes it better for the photos.

The back was packed full, with the requisite 3 rolls. I'd say it's fine but any shorter and the end straps wouldn't be effective and you'd risk losing the bag. The harness would cinch up even tighter though, so a longer, thinner bag might work.
Re: What harness
I use this. Similar in design to the Revelate harness, but a bit cheaper. https://www.bikepack.pl/sklep/dt-evo-harness/?lang=en
Re: What harness
That looks workable then for 5L or 8L dry bags. I generally use alpkit ones with the loops so that'd help.
Thanks very much for taking the time to do that.
Re: What harness
Would that fit a 20L Alpkit airlok bag in it ?ootini wrote: ↑Sun May 12, 2019 9:47 pm I use this. Similar in design to the Revelate harness, but a bit cheaper. https://www.bikepack.pl/sklep/dt-evo-harness/?lang=en

Re: What harness
Restrap make very good ones. I normally use mine with an Alpkit 13l or 20l dry bag but you can get a lot smaller and a lot bigger in it. 5-35l I would say. with it's quick release buckles, bag loading/unloading is about 3 seconds.
Thie seat pack harness is also brilliant.
Plus they a a good Yorkshire company made in Leeds.

Re: What harness
the bar harness empty but the seat pack loaded.
Re: What harness
I'd imagine so. I've had 13l airlok, 12l Lomo dry bag, 20l karrimor dry bags in it, all with room to spare. Not sure of the shape of the 20l airlok, but if I had to guess, I'd be pretty sure it would fit.Leerowe76 wrote: ↑Mon May 13, 2019 12:32 amWould that fit a 20L Alpkit airlok bag in it ?ootini wrote: ↑Sun May 12, 2019 9:47 pm I use this.
