Double butted or straight gauge?
So, other than a difference in weight of my wallet and the bars themselves, what practical difference is there between handlebars using double butted tubing and those using straight gauge? Will I notice extra flex in the butted tubed version or the straight gauge feel unduly stiff (fnarr, fnarr)?

What bars? I can't help but think that on 'loops' the addition of the loop or 'large bracing bit' as it could be thought of, negates the benefits of butting.

It's the Jones bars Stu. Looking at getting Cath a set. I've the SG Riser and the carbon versions but obviously there's a big difference in how those two materials behave. I definitely notice some give with the carbon fibre bars but considerably less so with the SG bars, the butted are probably somewhere between. As you note, there's only 240mm or so of "beam" to flex.Bearbonesnorm wrote:What bars? I had butted loops and could not discern any flex in them! I’d be interested to try jones with the cut loop and see if they are any better

Re: Double butted or straight gauge?
Although not from the Loops perspective. But my first proper butted (triple) was a Boardman Pro hardtail mtb. All them years ago when he had just started his own brand. It was one of the comfiest bikes (even when compared to the Independent Fabrication which was Reynolds 853 and obviously an IndyFab) I've ever ridden and have ridden a fair few....
Don't know bout the flex but I would guess that the butted versions would be marginally (or more) comfier. Besides, if its like for like and there is a weight saving to be had for free, take the weight saving (is what I'd do)...

I'm not sure that's free, why else is it referred to as spending a penny?
