And given many of us carry a SPOT / inReach someone would be able to call for assistance.

Though, as mentioned, I believe there is no mountain rescue in Wales.
Don't need to invest in an extra bit of gps Spot gear and being surrounded by mad people watching out for me... Fills me with hope. Where do I sign... :-bd

So, the new Spot X - like Inreach?
2 way messaging, tracking etc.
Can be on a one month plan - $15 for a month.
Looks a pretty big unit, but rechargeable battery with 7 day+ life.

Reviews aren’t favourable
Go look at amazon.com
Bad build quality

No message sent notification, there is on inReach.

Geostationary satellites, can give dead patches if in “shadow” of an obstruction. Think steep sided valley.

inReach isn’t cheap (hopefully SPOT X will reduce pricing); however, one gets what one pays for.

Thanks Asposium.
Giving up on my Spot3 as don't use it enough to justify the charges. Shame they don't do monthly.

On a more positive note about Spot,

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said the man, who has no other means of communication other than his personal locator beacon, was found to be "very ill" from a potentially life-threatening head injury.
Probably banging his head against a brick wall trying to get some discount............

Thanks Dave and Colin,

A timely reminder to knock mine on the head. I've emailed both the above.

Ditto, I’ve sent mine. The X plans look much better, €25 per year plus €15/month of use, which for the two or three months a year I use mine makes it much easier to stomach.

The New(er) Spot X has alternative, monthly, subscription plans. of course, it means buying a new device so you have to weigh up the cost of that too.

I’ve just swapped to a Garmin inreach mini.

Mainly due to restarting to sail and planning coastal and sea trips with the kids. It’s a very well put together item, very impressive. It does a lot of things too. Monthly subs too which was the clincher

Does the Inreach show up on tracking in the same way a SPOT does?
Thinking of the HT tracker which specifies SPOT or does the tracker website accept input from both?
Zazen - nothing happens next this is it.

I think that Trackleaders still only supports Spot but there are other similar tracking aggregators.

Edit: Trackleaders also support Inreach.

Well, it appears that I've got the year free. Emailed to cancel (and removed card payment details), got email offering €65 discount, replied to say I'd take the discount (but forgot to update card details), service has continued, but no charge. :-bd

Sure they'll catch up.

They are very slow at taking payment. I'm sure mine was over a month after my renewal date last time.
