Right this has probably been done to death.
Just about to buy a dyno wheel for my gravel/road bike.
I currently have 650 wheels and 700cc I'm trying to work out which is best/lightest etc for both types of riding, off road gravel and road so 2 tyres probably a 32mm 650 road or a 28mm 700cc
and 38mm 700cc and 47mm 650 for gravel. the same same wheel 650/700 is 100 + grams difference so its the effects of the 2 tyres really. I'm leaning towards the 650 but feel if I do long road rides it might be a disadvantage over the bigger distances?
Any insight much apreciated.

Think I'd simply go for whichever size I prefer riding. In my case that would be 650 with biggish tyres.

This isn't going to help, but I've got one of each...
I'd think about where and how you use each wheelset and then which is more compatible with a dynamo. Dynamos work best at higher speeds - the sort you maintain on the road - so you may not get the best out of a wheelset you primarily use off-road. Dynamo lights also aren't as bright as many battery lights. That tends to be less of an issue on the road, more off-road.
I like using the 650B wheels for mixed riding, or when I go exploring in an area and might end up off road. The 700s are saved for longer (maybe quicker) rides and tours when I'll likely be on tarmac all of the time.

Yea the 650 will be best for off road stuff. the problem is I like to do both and wont buy 2 wheels so its a compromise. but thinking I might regret the slower tyres on road with the 650.

Why not simply fit faster rolling tyres to the 650 wheels? Narrow doesn't equate to fast in many cases.thinking I might regret the slower tyres on road with the 650.

I'd say there's more/better/cheaper tyres available in 29"/700 than there is 27.5" which seems to be fairly new. WTB seem to have cornered the market and I don't personally rate them as being very durable.
