Roof Racks and Tow Bars – Declare as Car Modification

Exactly as per my post in STW, but for those who don't frequent:

Following a bit of an unfortunate event at the weekend I have been having discussions with my insurance company about whether my roof rack and roof mounted cycle carriers are car modifications or merely accessories. Apparently this argument can be had over tow bars as well.

Discussions are ongoing but appear to be going in a sensible direction.

Apparently if the rack had been declared there would have been no issues and no cost so, despite obviously not being a modification, it is probably easiest to let your insurance company know that you have one fitted.

Towbars were listed in my insurance company's list of modifications, and required declaration.

Tow bar isn't actually my issue but thought I would include to prompt people to think about it.

I've always understood anything done to the car post manufacturer would count as "modification".

For instance, in my case the towbar was added at the factory, so no need to discuss with the insurance company... no matter what type of rack I choose to put on said tow bar.
