Garmin etrex mount

Post by Al »

Had to share this, really simple but really pleased with how it works.
I hate the zip tie mounting brackets - they’re ugly and they never stay put. You can buy spare shoe/cleat things for exposure light brackets from tredz and having had a few of there lights I now have a few brackets on various bikes.

If you pull the rubber underside off the standard mount there is a little square hole. I shaved the rounded corners off the bottom to give it a flat base the pressed a nut into the hole using a vice (after widening a little a Stanley knife). A bit of loctite on the bolt then screwed the shoe / cleat from an exposure light onto the bottom.
The great thing is you can leave the plastic mount attached to the garmin (which it never came out of easy) and just clip it into the light mount.

Bravo! Nice to see someone carry through, I only got 80% of the way there!

I got a bit further along than this with a recessed slimline nut and some careful dremelling - I was also going to drill a small hole to attach a tether neatly. This was back in June 2015 though, so R&D is a bit slow
I intend to go full 3D printed, but it's been in concept stage since 2015

Looks good.

I bolted mine to a QR hope light mount so I didn't have to have a bracket on all 3 bikes and when I am not using it there is nothing on the bike. The hope mount uses a smaller bolt by the looks of it as I was able to just sit a small nyloc in that recess without making it bigger.

Warning though...the first one I did I flattened out the bottom of the garmin mount to accept the flat light mount, was fine for about 2 years but then the garmin mount cracked and the whole thing took off. Mk2 I rounded the top of the qr light mount to match the profile of the bottom of the garmin mount and bolted them together with epoxy between them and it's been totally rock solid.
