Replacement guy lines.

Post by m_kittle »

So up until now I've always used paracord for my guy lines as I mostly canoe camp so weight isn't much of an issue.
I'm looking to cut down on some weight and bulk - I've replaced my giant tarp with a little one and I have some 0.75mm nanocord which I thought about using.
The internet reckons it has a 17kg breaking strength - just wondering if this is strong enough?
Anyone got any thoughts?
I was just planning on a bowline on to the the out loops and then a clove hitch on to the peg which is what I've usually done before

It'll be borderline - 17kg isn't very much. Certainly less than a tarp can generate in the right (wrong?) conditions.

Hmmm good to know.
In my brain 17kg seems like plenty.

Is there a generally accepted minimum for guy lines?

Also, at 0.75mm wont tying the knots get a bit fiddly, or of you use linelocs it's a bit small to grip.

Some 1.5mm to 2mm dyneema is ideal, something like this

Not really but as a reference, 1.5mm Dymeena / Poly has a breaking strain of around 250kg.

There was a bit of blather about guy-lines in this thread:
