GArmin Dakota 20 help?

Post by FLV »

Any chance that anyone can help me out with a proceedure on the garmin dakota?

I can load a GPX and follow it. But how on earth do I record a track and succesfully get it off and be able to look at the time it took etc.

For some reason, The BB200 track only started recording after I changed the batteries

do I need to reset something before I start?

At the beginning/end of every ride you need to 'clear current track'/'save current track' respetively. This essentially saves your route as a GPX file, that you then upload to your computer. On the Etrex, it is in the menu headed 'active trail', I presume the Dakota will be similar.

Personally I use www.ridewithgps.com to view and save rides, it's free and simple to use.

When on the website you navigate the upload route menu, (having already plugged unit into USB) then brouse for the gpx file you have previously saved. When searching, the GPS will be found as a removable device in the 'My computer' folder and the file you want will be in one of the Garmin files, probably under 'GPX files'.

Garmin's really aren't very intuitive I'm afraid :x

this could be because of the limit on track-points for the Dakota (I've no idea what that might be) but I know that on my eTrex it's 500 and so I have to 'filter' all routes/tracks via Mapsource and then upload.

they're incredibly user-unfriendly devices!!!

I got my route on there to follow after reducing the waypoints - Thanks.

I'll try that site to get the files off next :D
