Wanted 8/10 speed drivetrain

Post by jaseisace »

Hi guys I need a few parts for a build I’m dong for a neighbors kid .... his mums a care worker and he’s got no dad and he spends a bit of time on his own in the house or with his sister when she’s not at work ( she works for the NHS and has been pulling some crazy shifts at the manor hospital)
I’ve got a frame, crank, stem, bars I just need a
9/10 speed cassette, shifter, chain and mech
27.5 rear wheel
27.5 fork (anything mildly bouncy will do)
And some cheap hydros ( Clarks or Tektro old deores anything like that)
I’m not asking for anything karma ( but that would help ) but has to be fairly budget
What ya got?
Thanks for giving this some thought
Cheers

Well you know .... thanks 😊
I feel for him a bit ( without going into details)
Life is pretty dull for him and at 15 he should be getting some joy outta life
I’ve got a saddle and seatpost for it
What grips you got ( I’ve got some old superstar excels but they might be a big for his teenage hands)
Tyres would be great though ... what do you want for them my friend??
Cheers

Schwalbe roclet ron 27.5× 2.8 (... posted)

WTB Convict 27.5 × 2.5 (... posted) must warn it weighs about 1.45kg.

DMR fat grips in green

Pro Koryak type lock on grips which are thunner but still fat enough.

The 11 speed chain can be married to an 11 speed cassette (32 big sprocket) which has been reamed to marry to a 10 speed hub... That way if you had someone with am 11 speed rear shifter available then youre sorted from that end. A 10 speed crankset can easily take an 11 speed drivetrain without fuss. Just opening up your options for you.

Chain and cassette ... posted :-bd

[prices edited out cos their silly in the low single figures... Have messaged ya... if anyone else wanted em for their nieghbours bike or equivalent to your situation then also welcome]

Hi Jase, pm me your address and I’ll send a xtr 9 speed rear mech - old but good. I’ll have a look for a shifter but not sure ( but it is a big spares box!)

Hi Mark
Thanks for the offer you are so very kind
I think I need a 9speed cassette
Some disk brakes ( I’ve got mechanical ones for him at a push)
27.5 wheels ( I had a front but when I was looking at it yesterday some of the nipples had cracked through the rim so I don’t know how safe it would be for him )
27.5 tyre
Pedals
27.5 fork
Thanks for anything you can spare ...... I saw him yesterday trudging to the shop and I so wanted to show him what you guys and myself had pulled together for him .... but I want it complete to give him
I asked him about school and whether they were teaching him anything online ..... he said over the gate mind that because he hasn’t got the right computer equipment he hasn’t been able to do much of his maths and English and at 15 he was supposed to be having mock exams around about now .
So I’ve got him to send me the email from the school and I’ve printed it out ..... and because I teach electrical formula and electrical technical language, I said he could ask his mum if he could WhatsApp me if he’s got any problems understanding the work.

flat pedals or spd's? I have some SPD Flats (are they M645 or something)? Probably no good as I can't imagine he would want SPDs

Or have a look at mfezela's post - he has some foc flat pedals

Hold on a minute Steven Large... I've just spent the past hour resizing (was 800g too heavy) my parcel and have fortunately (for me)/unfortunealty (for you) managed to include some HT Pa030A in blue. Lovely pedals they are with fine smooth bearings

Anyway... update from my ends. Included (in 2 parcels)

9 speed KMC chain with its quick link and confirmed wear hasn't reached 0.75 yet :-bd so will hopefully live happily ever after with a certain XTR rear mech

Blue flatty pedals with pins still intact and bearings buttery.

1 x tyre (2.5 inch)

Grips (I included the green ones which are a bit thick but not much more than the Pro. They hopefully will go better with the orange frame and kids like DMR over Pro (I'd have thought!)...

Will pop it in the post in next 20ish mins God Willing

Hi chaps
I’m nearly complete with the neighbors bike
All I need is a wheelset
The frame is a 27.5 the fork I’ve got is a 29er and Shaf has a 26er wheelset that needs a new hub ( the current one in the rear that’s gone is a shimano m475 ) if anyone has one of these lying round and will take 10 speed cassette, Shaf has kindly said that he would build it into the wheelset for me
Cheers All you good people out there

I've got a spare 29er front wheel you'd be welcome to (Deore disc hub, generic rim) - not sure if that helps though. I gave the rear to my girlfriend when hers was nicked.

Jase... if the frame is a 27.5er abd the front fork a 29er... you sure putting some 26er wheels won't drop the BB height a bit too much?? I don't know the answer sorry but it is a tiny risk??

I checked on the 475 hub and can happily report (according to CRC Q& A) it can accomodate a 10 spd mtb cassette as long as you ensure the spacer is applied...

Well Shaf mate
Your concerns are valid the fork is a 100mm travel one so not too bad the frame is a medium giant atx so designed for a120mm 27.5 fork ( so they should cancel each other out )
And then the wheelset...... well I’m getting desperate cos everything out there at the moment is £100 or more and I’ve already spent more than o should’ve on the fork
North wind yes please I’ll take it ( hmmm a trendy mullet build perhaps 🤔)
Please email me on
jaseisace71(at)gmail(dot)com
Thanks for all your help lads
It really demonstrates generosity on your parts

I'll email later today after I've checked in the loft to see if there's anything in there that would help.

Well Richie
I reckon it could if I put some old smart Sam cx tyres on it
I could re-spoke the wheel too
Yes that would be cool
