WTD: Hase Pino

Post by Borderer »

Friends of ours have a son who suffered oxygen deprivation at birth. He is a little miracle and by far the happiest soul I have ever met. He has defied expectations by learning to walk, but the mechanics of pedalling have so far eluded him.

Our friends would love to be able to take him and their two older kids on some sort of adventure like our velodyssey trip. His mum has seen the Hase pino advertised and thinks it might work for him, only trouble is they can't afford one.

Does anyone know of somewhere they could get a used one or rent/borrow one for a bit? Alternatively does anyone know of a similar type of bike that might work?

Many thanks.

I'd contact Ben at Kinetics in Glasgow as he really is the expert in "unusual" bikes and trikes. He has also modified a few to help some customers.

Funny you should mention this, but jamiep from this forum posted a Strava ride entitled ‘adaptive cycles ride leader assessment’ today. I suspect if you drop him a PM he’d give more details (Edinburgh based)

I’ve done some sessions with experience cic in holmfirth. They specialise in hand bikes but are likely to know about other options for differently abled folks.

Worth a google, or I can dig out an email address. Craig is the guy to speak to. Or Laura.

Ahem. I don't shout about this on here, but I'm Ben's competition when it comes to bikes for people with disabilities. We don't really compete as we're at different ends of the country, Ben does all sorts of odd bikes whereas I mainly do disability cycling.

The company I work for has probably sold more Pino's than anyone else in the UK, and we have one available ex-demo currently at a good price. It's a Pino Tour, with the wide stand they'd need, 5 years old, and only been test-ridden around the park we're based in other than a one week trip to Holland. Various adaptions can be fitted to suit your mates kid, harness, any special pedals or leg-holders, thoracic supports as needed etc.

An alternative would be a Circe Cycles Morpheus http://www.circecycles.com/products/morpheus/. They're a good bit cheaper (for good reasons) but they don't work as well, and they don't solve problems anything like as well as a Pino does. Still, they do suit some.

Yes, please send me a message. I volunteer on Sundays at ABC (All-Ability Bike Centre) in Edinburgh https://www.facebook.com/EdinburghABC/
The contact details of the two Davids who work there are in the link.

We support anyone with additional support needs, whatever that need might be, to enjoy riding a bike. We have standard two wheelers, tandems, hand cycles, trikes, wheelchair transporting cargo bikes, cargo bikes, side by side tandems.

We use a safe, closed off hockey pitch but also have direct access to some surrounding closed cycle paths (us volunteers should be avaiable to take someone out for a ride together with a career/parent).

We might also be able to arrange a loan of these bikes.

Yes, a brilliant response. What a helpful, talented and well connected bunch we have here.

I have passed all your responses on to my friend who is very pleased with them. She has apparently tried ABC already and was told it was only for adults.... She says she will be in touch with Oliver first as he sounds most likely to be able to help them.

I've been pondering ways to take my eldest out cycling once he outgrows his trailer and this thread has given me some good ideas. :-bd

That is absolutely wrong advice. Most of the clients I see are children, some just toddler age. I hope she can try again as it would be great if they could come by

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who replied to this thread. I passed the info on and it started a journey to get the funds in place for a Hase Pino. The money they needed was raised with incredible speed - so many people chipped in and raised funds in all sorts of wonderful ways. At the weekend the family took delivery of the bike from Ben at Kinetics in time for a thank-you picnic in the park. The wee man is delighted with his new bike - as I think you can all see from his face.
