First Bikepacking adventure in the north west, looking for company

Post by chqshaitan »

Hi All,

I have just recently got into bikepacking, all my kit is on order and looking for an adventure, initially somewhere semi local so i can test everything out without being too far from home. I live in the north west (warrington). Is anyone possibly up for a ride or after some company?

Rivington area - how far are you thinking /wanting to ride ?
Quick overnighter might be 10-30 ish miles depending on where etc

If bikepacking involves pubs then I am not the rider for you.
Ps i snore so if this annoys then i am not the rider for you

Hi Bud,

That sounds perfect, Your snoring wont bother me, but just so you know, I snore also.

Distance wise, no idea, would depend on the terrain. Happy to do any reasonable distance. I am mainly a road rider, but got my old cc bike set up with gravel tyres so can do some gravel routes.

I am not one for pubs but may bring a drink or two along to celebrate. For me, its about being out in nature.

Are you a wild camper or like a camp site with facilities for the nights?

What area of Warrington are you?
If you can get on the Sankey Canal & follow it all the way to Carr Mill, then onto Wigan, there’s also some spots over that way. If you want to put the mileage in, you can also continue onto Rivington.

There’s also heading north up the coast to Formby, or into North Wales. There must be some places in Delamere, although never seen anything posted up.

JC will also probably be along soon with options..

Thanks bud, I am in birchwood, so the m62 side of warrington, just off junction 11. I have predominantly done on road cycling but want to broaden my horizons by doing some bikepacking, so off road tracks ideally.

I’m not familiar with the riding routes over in Birchwood, but if you can get over to Winwick, then down to the Fiddle I’th Bag, you can get on the canal at the back of the pub.
The canal is a good ‘highway’ that you could use for accessing Delemere one way, all the way to Rivington the other, & beyond.

After you’ve been out a few times it should help you identify suitable spots more local to you.

If Lazarus is happy to organise a Rivington overnight, I’d be interested in coming along..

Sounds like a plan, is that pub the one off alder lane? if so, thats only 5 miles from me.

I was thinking about heading to Delemere, Funnily enough, that sounds like a perfect route. I am on komoot now checking it out, thanks for the heads up.

Is this the sort of route you are talking about?

That’s the one! Although I think it’s closed now.

That route looks very much like the one I’m thinking of, but instead of crossing on the Runcorn bridge, you cross much nearer Warrington.

The other way from the Fiddle passes under the arches near Earlestown, onto Blackbrook & Carr Mill dam 🦫

Yes happy to do this there are plenty of bivvy spots from relatively high up if wind free to hiding in the woods if its less pleasant.
I will wait to see how many are interested and then sort out a date and a route
I am assuming MTB and not that technical - basically you could do it on a gravel bike type route.

Great Stuff Lazarus. I am looking forward to it :D

I do not have a mountain bike, but will be using my cycle cross with 40mm gravel tyres, which should suffice.

Great stuff, dont mind road either, just nothing major that would require a mountain bike or anything technical ideally

Hi Bud,

100 miler atm is probably a bit too much for me, as I have done a few rides recently(10-15miles), but nothing major, also not used my bike heavily laden either. So to play safe, anything in the sort of 20-30 miles per day would be ideal, but happy to go with the flow. As i am a big lad, the less hills the better :)

Just spotted this one.

There are loads of places out of sight, in hidden dips and valleys away from the early morning dog walkers like this one, which I found this morning near Formby
