Looking comparatively cool, a bit drizzly and a light breeze - would nice to have been in the sun but this is probably a better bet, all things considering...

Felt pretty cold here today, but then a week ago it was nearly 20C warmer!

Is anyone in town tomorrow night? Richard was talking about being at The Railway (next to Tesco). We might pop down for a chat and a beer. Or a beer and a chat.

I'd be happy enough with 10c overnight, will be properly cold if it gets any lower though as I'm planning on packing light.

I think it will be OK weatherwise. Min 12degC overnight and light breeze, and max 17deg during the day. With the odd shower. That's just fine isn't it? Short sleeves and armwarmers, and a light waterproof. Feels like a long time since I've done a ride like this so just getting my plan together....

Will see people at the start on Sat am

I don't do armwarmers, but I'll be short sleeve top and packable jacket. If I get cold I have the puffy.

Maybe I should try the armwarmers for the first time. :???:

Unrelated, I'm really hoping to make it to Dent Head Viaduct / Cowgill (~115 miles) the first day.

Anywhere near there that might be good to stop (tent)?

Plenty of spots at the top of Cam Head just before you get there, it's only a fifteen minute descent to get to Cowgill viaduct from there. There's also various spots on the way down the dale after the viaduct including one just at the start of the climb over Great Wold.

thenorthwind wrote: Thu Jul 29, 2021 10:29 am Another one bites the dust, literally in this case. I don't even have a good excuse really. I never thought it would come to this but I've got so much going on at home with various DIY projects around the building work in the kitchen that finally started this week (it would be this week wouldn't it), unusually stressful work situations (which I've been dealing with while the wall under my feet is knocked out and the dust covering my keyboard as I'm typing), and trying to keep my OCD partner sane while I and various other people knock bits of the house down around her and cover the rest of the house, and I mean all of it (hence literally biting the dust), in a layer of dust. I've barely had the time to ride recently, unless it involves a trip Screwfix. I got up at 5.30 last Sunday and knocked out an 80 mile road ride before going back to more DIY, which convinced me that the YD300 might be a go-er, for a while. But I don't have the energy, mental, or physical, to properly prepare for a bikepacking trip, and I can't justify 4 nights away from home at the moment - I was going to combine it with a trip to visit my sister, who's going back to work next week after having my niece, who's nearly 1 and I've met once, so I'm going to do that at the weekend instead. Priorities.

TL;DR Sorry for the brain dump, not doing the YD300

Looks like there's plenty of spare tickets that were before mine, but anyone would be welcome to take my place.

Thanks techno and Bob for putting the list of resupply points together, very useful, and still will be in the future. As recently as last weekend, I put them all, straight from techno's map, into a GPX of POIs to load into Viewranger (should work with other apps/devices too), so I'll leave this link here in case it's of use to anyone, fill yer boots:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/023ycr3rhfmcp ... s.gpx?dl=0

Good luck if you're still riding, sorry I'm not going to meet some of you.
thats a shame bud, hope you make good progress on the work!
I've grabbed the GPX. thanks, very useful!

I might have to point you at my GPS as I have no idea where Cam Head is, at least in relation to Cowgill. I found Grove Head nearby but the only Cam Head I could see was earlier on in the route near Starbotton. I'd be happy enough stopping before Cowgill as I could just start again at first light anyway. I'd just like to get the climb out of Bainbridge out of the way so I've got an easier day two.

Great Wold looked like it had promise based on the satellite map, if only because there's very little in the way of civilization there.

Isn't the climb out of/after Bainbridge Cam High Road? The one that goes on for ages? So Cam Head would be up there somewhere? But best to check with Bob as I'm only guessing

On that climb the tarmac bit straight out of the village is the hardest bit, once on the track it's a steady gradient, I quite enjoyed it on the Dales Divide.

Yeah there’s a couple of Cam Heads

Top of the Roman Road climb up from Bainbridge, across the top and where you leave the tarmac there’s plenty of flat ground.

On Great Wold you need to get to just about the top of the climb before there’s any flat ground

You'll know Cam Head after the Dent valley - it's the big hill with swearwords dropped every 20 metres or so.

Depends what you mean by "bivvy spots" - there's loads of flat spots or spots under trees all the way down the Dent valley (including a basic campsite after the little footpath stretch). But if you want an open barn or proper cover I am not sure how much there is (I can't remember seeing any).

Last year I stopped at Ribblehead viaduct at 200km - there's shelter of sorts there.
(And there is a pub at Ribblehead with a marquee in the garden if you get there late and leave early...... )

Well about 30 set off on the two routes. Looked like a certain Mr Rothwell meant business - he was carrying less than I carry on a day ride! Then again at the pace he goes it might just be a day ride for him.

Currently quite cool with occasional light showers.

Well that was a disaster.

Pace wasn't terrible at the start, but I could tell I was working much harder on hills that I'd normally demolish without much of an issue. Couldn't really work out what was going on beyond my legs flooding with lactic acid every time I raised my heartrate. Zero strength in them whatsoever, normally I can sort of flex them and kick in a decent amount of pace to kill off the steeper hills, but they may as well have just been bits of meat and bone attached at the hip today.

A few hours in and my stomach was starting to do unpleasant things, occasionally requiring me to get off the bike and steady myself for a few moments. By the time I'd got to Starbotton I knew it was over, even moderate inclines were taking full focus / effort. Worse than that, for the first time since my recovery I was starting to feel my hip playing up, I assume because my pedalling form was all over the shop.

Definitely some lessons to be learned. I suspect going the last few days with very little sleep played a big part in it, and as usual my bike was prepared last minute (and badly), so I was having issues with changing gears / dropping the chain too. Need to sort my life out, no point doing all this training and then wasting all that effort due to stress / lack of time.

Ho hum. :|

Poor show from me too. Horrible cramps kicked in around 40km in, couldn't clear them despite plenty of salts, water and pood being taken on. Bumped.imto another fella at kettle well who's GPS had packed up. Want enjoying myself and had nowhere near enough salt tabs to last another day and a half (not that they were working anyway!). Had a painful spin back to Skipton and took the train home.
Meh.
I've never suffered from cramps this early in a ride before so I'm a bit puzzled why it was so bad. Maybe I was dehydrated before I set off, but I don't think so.

Sorry to hear you had a bad day too rich..

Ahh, that explains why I didn't see you at Starbotton, I had a meal there and figured I'd see you go past.

Hopefully the other boners had a better time of it!
