@JohnClimber I recognise those lauf forks - chatted with you briefly on the short climb just after the start I think.

The one of the Grot by the waterfall at Rydal Hall reminds me of an old mate from Ambleside, he'd sit in there with a fine cigar and contemplate the world like some reclusive old japanese zen monk.

They are old slate quarries/mines (not really mines, more a quarry that they left the roof on). There's lots in the area between Coniston, Tilberthwaite, Elterwater and Rydal.
