Low(er) fronted Bibshorts... suggestions?

Post by Richard G »

I've got a handful of bibshorts that I've started trying on longer rides, but it's a bit of a nightmare taking a leak whilst wearing all but one of them.

If I was doing the roadie thing (no over shorts) then sure, I can do the whole "roll up the leg, stick the trouser sausage down the side" thing, but this is specifically for when I've got shorts / trousers on top. So can anyone suggest one that either come with a flap of sorts (risky with no underwear!) or that the front is low / flexible enough to be easily pulled down?

I think part of my problem is having long ass legs and a short ass body, so naturally most of these come to above my belly button. Ironically the Specialised ones I have that are like this are probably the ones with the padding that works least for me, so I'm in no rush to use them for long rides anyway.

(and yes, I know that compared to women I have nothing to complain about, but I thought I'd ask all the same)

I've some Assos (wonder if that'll get caught by the swear filter?) bib shorts that are low fronted, certainly calls of nature aren't a problem. Not cheap though. :o

I wear Endura Singletrack bib liners under my baggies as these have an overlap in the fabric at the front which allows for 'comfort breaks' when wearing them.

Edit, now found them on the Endura website

http://www.endurasport.com/products/?ProductID=796

They don't mention the overlap as a feature but I'm sure it's deliberate. I originally bought mine as they are mesh and so cooler in the summer, the comfort break feature was just an added bonus I discovered when the turned up.

Just do the willy periscope, works for me, except I always seems to reserve some wee to release into the chamois after I bring down the periscope.

I normally wear bib shorts but for bikepacking and with more cafe/loo stops I wear a pair of gore liner shorts (no shoulder straps), under a pair of endura baggy shorts.

You can keep your warm synthetic jacket on and still have full access to down below :-0

Much better

Yeah, I generally do shorts for very long rides / bikepacking, but I'm looking to increase my comfort a bit as I've noticed that when I'm pushing hard that I've got fairly badly bruised up. Fine for one day, not so good for multiple days in a row.

The gore liner shorts I mentioned are vented and very lightweight but have an excellent pad in like a pair standard bib tights.
So get all the comfort with the added benifit of ease of access. ;-)

Gore are pretty low cut I find, so perfect for a comfort break. I bought a pair of Altura bibs a couple of months ago, and they're very high cut, so much so that I have to lean forward if I need to pause.

Some of them can even do it without stopping the bike!

I find 7mesh shorts nice and low at the front, they are also really comfy for long rides and were heavily reduced at evans a while back.

Bah. I bought the Endura singletrack bibshorts and whilst they're perfect in theory (the flap is genius!), the pad just doesn't fit me properly. Am gutted.

Their FS260 shorts fit me perfectly though, so at least I have another non bib option available to me.

Also tried their MT500 bib, but that's not a good fit either.

RedWhite bibs have a fairly low front. The comfiest bibs I've worn too

Disclaimer - I'm sponsored by them but had bought some with all of my own money long before that. I wouldn't wear bibs that weren't the best I could get for obvious reasons

7mesh shorts are very low at the front and also very comfy. They are pricy, but Evans were selling them at 60% off a while back so worth a look if you can find some similarly discounted.

You said that once. Maybe you're sponsored? :P

But yeah, I looked at their retail price... NOPE. lol (Evans don't sell them any more)

I'm encouraged by the fact that they seem aimed at very long distance.

I find leaning forwards is enough to get my sausage out to a satisfactory position for urination, and that's with some high bibs. I do have a tall upper body though...and do have to lead quite far forward sometimes!

I'm getting old though. I reckon there will come a point where I don't have enough time to get my bits out before peeing myself.
