What's the word for that thing ?........
Surely there must be a word for when you're in unfamiliar terrain, it's going dark and you are looking for a suitable place to doss, it's not ideal, rough ground, no water, draughty, etc then the following morning you cycle another km and there's the camping equivalent of Nirvana with a bubbling spring, soft grassy hollow, perhaps even a refugio or bothy. I suppose Sod's law partially covers it but here's hoping the hive mind can come up with a more aposite word?

Experience.
It fits, in a funny sort of way, one of my favourite sayings:
"Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it."

Luck of the draw.
I had something very similar on TNR last year...passed out behind a rock cause I couldn't find a flat pitch. 5 minutes riding in the morning exposed half an acre of flat, grassy, camping friendly ground. I was just too far gone to do that extra 5 minutes that evening.

Yup
Premature Encapsulation.
I think you may have coined something there.

Even worse is kipping in a semi crap spot when you passed somewhere which retrospectively was perfect five miles back.

Or kipping somewhere a bit crap and then finding the perfect spot the next morning just around the corner...

Try and keep up Ian, that was the point of the original post.
It struck me as I was driving back from today's recce for the Spanish C2C, I'd been looking on Google earth for a suitable bivvy spot and found what looked like a good location alongside a bassa which is a man-made water hole used for irrigation and putting out forest fires. Turned out to be fenced off and surrounded by prickly bushes. About 500m further on there was a sheltered spot in an orchard which fits the bill nicely.
