I've built (and constantly refining) my grvlgrndng bike so hopefully many more squares within my grasp. Currently at 17x17 I think but this should go up exponentially (maybe too strong a word) once I tick a few choice boxes.

Have also been trying extra hard to tie off the loose ends to attempt and clean up the square and make it look pretty (or something like a proper square without random blue squares coming out if ut) so I could showcase it on that other 'square' thread. But it looks highly unlikely I'll gets it looking good/neat

Anyway, what a wonderful feeling knowing you've ventured somewhere you've not been before. Added adavantage of the grvlgrndng bike is that, due to its nature, hopefully will keep me off any secret singletracks that are actually footpaths as it doesn't like super bumpy/narrowish stuff!!

I went out today with aim of extended my square southwards and taking me to 11x11. Part way through I just bonked and struggled with the heat so headed back along the canals, not the most direct route, but flat and shaded, I’m lucky having some many miles of canals around here.
Anyway, I luckily managed to grab this square by a nats chuff, I wasn’t expecting to due to bugging out early.... In my bonked state I had the idea that veloviewer/strava should make a Sonic the hedgehog ‘ping’ every time you enter a new square...... Now I’ve cooled down a bit I’m sure I’ve probably read that idea on here  :???:  I’m off for a lie down

It was very hot today, I ran out of water and in my desperation to search a churchyard for a tap (solid grey building in middle of map, and there wasn't one) I neglected to cycle ten metres further on this road. Only a 30km trip back to get it. I also remembered my GPS is set to 60 second record so I need to change that for next time.

Couldn't make the WRT in the end so I did my own QRT in the Quantocks, with a surprise bonus of going up to 32x32. :-bd

Likewise. Don't you just love those winding roads that run along the boundary of squares dipping in and out of the square to each side  Added 38 over the weekend.

I set off on a 34 mile route, yesterday, which would have finished of my current western expansion plans, and take me from 25x25 to 29x29.
Unfortunately a comedy fall into the nettles and thistles resulted in my saddle pointing the wrong way. However, instead of the usual "seatpost rotated in seat tube", the seatpost had stayed put, and the clamp section managed to overcome the strength of whatever process bonded it to the seatpost.
It still appeared to be attached solidly, but I thought it best to minimise the risk and plot a course back to the start.

So, only 19 miles covered, and about half of the expected tiles.

Ah well, 29x29 will have to wait until next month.

(Got a good deal on a new seatpost, though)

Hoping August open day will be on, otherwise it’ll be a long wait to next year!

Believe me I’ve been staring at this tile for a week or so, and had a look at pretty much every conceivable entrance - all locked gates and a fair schlep to anywhere near the hall.

So I was hurtling along in the gloaming tonight on some beautiful quiet roads and a car came right up alongside me flashing it's lights, then shouted at me to stop. The car was a mobile security unit and apparently I was in the middle of a private estate.

I was summarily escorted back from whence I came.

Had a flashback to this thread and wondered if it was the same place you'd been talking about. Turns out it was.

Got the square.

Just putting together a square hunting route. Just happens to have about five pubs on it... would be rude not to help out right?

Given the area I'll be hitting up (mining valleys of South Wales), I'll almost certainly need Dutch courage!

Oh man... The route I put together is 40 miles with 7,300ft of elevation (65km / 2200m).

I'm definitely not ready for a ride like that, but I'll see what I can do! Stupid steep Welsh Valleys.

Let’s see your map when you’re back (so we can see how wiggly your line gets as you progress through the pubs)

You'll probably see the route stop before hitting 50mph as the better half picks me up.

Aww, I snapped my chain when I was about a 1/4 of the way through. Proper downer.

I did have a quick link but the chain was in the wrong place when I linked it up so I had to bail on the route. Downer. :(

Edit - Oh, and managed to go in the wrong direction up a massive hill. My route reading is rusty as hell.

Is there any way of getting a route out of Komoot without paying? There are other mapping sites I can use (and generally do), but I was wondering if I was missing something.

It's my own route, if that makes a difference.

The free version of Komoot lets me download my routes as gpx files (on desktop).

I've now got 6 or 7 overlapping 11x11 squares... just a couple of odd tiles to hit and that should be 13x13.

While checking this, I realised that I have at least 2 tiles which are out at sea due to heading out to the water at low tide. totally irrelevant point, just looked strange!

Where are you pressing to do it? When I try to export it tells me I need to unlock a region.

Stupidly missed these two today so I’m still on a pathetic 10x10. The first one was a cheeky ride along a footpath, the farmer was ploughing the field so didn’t hang around to check my phone to see if I made it... it’s a pain as the M5 takes up most of the square and the tracks are private drives/farms, must’ve missed it by 2 metres

Image

And this one I changed course to miss out a steep climb, serves me right

Oh man... the area I was cycling in on the weekend just got locked down! I have no idea if I can drive through it if I'm not planning on stopping, so I might have to find a different set of squares for next weekend.

I don't understand - in what way was the chain in the wrong place?
