Dynamo from Alpkit

Post by Adventurer »

Noticed that Alpkit are now doing a dynamo. For only £59!

To me it looks like a SP Dynamo. So is it just a rebranded SP or something else.

If it is a re branded SP then that price is really good.

Sorry for the daft question, but are spoke holes a standard distance from the axle centre? I.E. Could I just relace it into current wheel? Or would I need to get a new set of spokes? Always a first time to build a wheel lol!

They're all different, so the spoke lengh could be different.

I'd be surprised if you could dissemble your old wheel and rebuild it anyway. Theres bound to be a few seized nipples and you'll probably bend a few spokes at the same time.

Will generally vary from wheel to wheel, so more than likely, new spokes for you

An observation i made with mines is that a regular 32 hole rear pro 2 with regular many gear freehub. Uses the same length spokes as a front sp pd8 or pd8x ( built both recently)

So you only need one spoke.length if you carry spares :)

I wonder if there are some accessories on the way as I'm not sure a direct USB out is that useful in itself. Can't complain at the price if you can get away with a QR though. :-bd

SP are made in Taiwan

The Alpkit says China so I suspect it's s copy and not a re-brand.

Doesn't mean it's a bad thing I suspect with Alpkits legendary customer service if anything went wrong they'd be the ones you're talking to in that respect may be even better

Cheers, I thought that might be the case. Oddly enough the wheel calculator site I found doesn't list alpkit or love mud hubs for calculating spoke length needed. Be use if they gave some detail to enable that.

They're a brand new hub - so I'd be far more surprised if they were listed anywhere. I'm sure an email to Alpkit will furnish you with the dimensions.
May the bridges you burn light your way

No I wasn't surprised and would have been surprised, but thought they might have had the relevant spec. on the Alpkit page.

All said while treading carefully with no comment about Alpkit or their sources etc intended.

It's not an SP but it's similar. The design of the hub was done by 'SP' himself, it does have some new arrangements inside over a Shimano or SON. The company that manufactured the SP seems to have taken a lot of 'influence' from SP in designing their new lower-priced hub. I was suprised how similar they are. The guy behind SP is a really good chap who I have a lot of time for. The manufacturer is also a good one, so how much 'influence' and shared IP was fair to all, I'm not sure.

@Trailrat - does the rear not need two lengths due to dish?

there is a mm in .

for me thats close enough to carry 1 spoke and even build with 1 spoke length.

its like 288 and 289 for my rim - The above may not be true if your running some kind of ofset rim but for most central alternate drilling patterns it will be.

I bought a 64 of 288 spokes and built my front and rear wheels for the tourer and they are spot on

on a pro 2 the distance from flange to axle face is pretty similar on both sides - the disk side flange is set inboard quite a way - thats the reason this works.
