15mm dynamo hub with QR adapter

Post by BreninBeener »

I have a 700c wheeled road bike and a 29er HT. Both are disc braked.

The road bike has a standard QR on the front wheel, the 29er has a 15mm axle.

With wheel sizes being the same, it occurs to me that i may be able to use the same dynamo wheel to provide power on either bike.

Will any of the 15mm dynamo hubs take one of the 'slip in' CRC/Nukeproof adapters to become qr compliant? I have a set of Easton wheels that i do this on to swap wheels between bikes, so it seems a good idea.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I got keep pedalling to build me my dynamo wheel with this premise.

I use a SP PD 8X hub (http://www.sp-dynamo.com/8Xseriesdynamo%20hub.html), had it laced up to a crest and Its been great. At the moment I use it all of the time with the supplied axle adapter, its been fine with no difference. [You can see the adapter that comes with it at the bottom of the link]

Give Shona at keep pedalling a call and they will sort you out

Hope that helps

I've got that exact adapter for a front wheel and it's been fine on the tourer.

I got my hub cheap from Germany and it didn't have the adaptor but a generic one worked fine. Iirc the 15mm ones are more efficient.

SP with the adapter supplied works fine.

As other said the SP adapter work fine with qr. Also had mine drilled out to 10mm bolt through that fits in qr dropouts but seem a bit stiffer.

I have a pd8x and a pd8 . I swear my light comes on full power at a lower speed with the x model as well as being 15mm compatible.

Any truth to that clever electrics people ( im a mechie i can fudge my way round electrics but its mostly witchcraft to me)

I have the PD8 on my road bike and its been flawless.
Also got a PD-8X on the MTB and it usually works. Running on the supplied QR adaptor axle, it looks like tolerances are ever so slightly out, under heavy (mtb) braking, the hub itself slips around the QR axle and pulls the connector out, unless it cable-tied in. Running it on 15mm thru-axle forks its fine. As a work-around, I filed the end of the adaptor down, so the clamping force of the QR goes through the hub axle, rather than the adaptor.

I'd forgotten that my first one did this as the hub was 99.8mm and the adapter was 100mm exactly. The later adapters fit the hub widths fine though.

And a light bulb goes on!

I'll get handy with a file later :-)
