Crest ZTR Tubeless

Post by rocklobstercat »

I've just been getting some new Stans Crest ZTR 29er wheels and have had a hell of a job trying to get tyres on. Continental Race Kings and Schwalbe Rocket Ron's were a huge struggle. I was trying them with an inner tube so think that may be the problem. They go on tubeless ok, but if I have problems on the trail and need to fit an inner tube I'm going to be stuck. Anyone else had problems with these rims? Any tyre recommendations that go on easy?

Been using Crest, 355 and Arch 29er rims for 6-7 years and sad to say, never had a problem. The trick is to make sure the bead is centred in the well of the rim before removing and as you fit. Also if fitting a tube, do the part by the valve last as the valve stops the tyre going into the centre well.

If having a 'mare maybe need to review how you are fitting / removing the tyre?

Edit: and fitting with a tube first helps seat the tubeless tape nice and tight to the rim as well.

What the chap above says. :-bd

I used to use a tube to seat the tape when I first did it but haven't bothered since and just pull the tape really tight and hope for the best. It's been fine.

Get a tubeless repair kit and further reduce the need for messing about with tubes.

Some tyres worse than others,

Smorgasbords on crests /arches = hell,

Schwalbes go on fine.

Specialiseds go on fine

Maxxis and kenda kevlar beads are bollocks, the steel beads pretty much fall on.

Still nothing comes close to a michelin comp 16 or 24 on a mavic 321

Fitted new Conti Folding MK2 and XK on new DTS 481 rims using thumbs only.
Did you tape the rims or did they come taped?
Had a problem with WTB rims as they were taped flat across the well.
I taped these new rims myself just the well as using tubes to make sure the tyres seated down in.
As a rule of thumb have found if you cant rotate the tyre with just one side of the tyre on the rim its going to be a problem.
Zazen - nothing happens next this is it.

Tubeless setups and the various issues to be had seem to be a variable and personal thing. I've not found smorgasbords to be a problem on crests or arches. Or maxis tyres either.

The tightest tyres I ever battled with were on my sons old 24 inch wheeled bike. The absolute limit!

I have some Geax Sturdy that were a nightmare to get on my 29er i19 WTB wheels.

Half an hour of struggling and swearing for each tyre using every trick I could google. Then I'd obviously nipped both tubes in the struggle! Another half our for each wheel off and then the same back on!

I hope I never have a puncture!

I didn't go riding that day after that 5 minute tyre change

Yes, my rims came already taped with yellow Stans tape. I'm going to try going tubeless and see how that goes. What's other people's opinions of tubeless setups? Advantages etc.

Unless you want to swap your tyres regularly (rather than when they are worn out) and you have the knack of setting them up I can't really see any disadvantages. One minor pita is that if you get a hole that won't seal and you need to use a tube you have to be careful of all the thorns you've picked up!
