Commuter Tyres

Post by Chew »

Ok I know i'll get 100 different answers, but anyone any recommendations for tyres that will cope with 90% road use and 10% offroad in dry conditions?

700x47 is the largest the frame will take and tubeless compatible is also useful

If the off road is dry but loose they're a touch 'exciting'.

How puncture phobic are you?

Touch wood, I tend to avoid punctures (about 2 this year), but with it being used for commuting i'd like to avoid as much as possible

Marathon Dureme or just standard Marathon's then.

Grip fairly well unless it's sloppy.

Equally the equivalent Conti touring tyres would also work. From experience they can seem narrower than the stated size though.

Clement MSO X'Plor gravel tyres, go up tubeless fine but add some extra goo to seal them well. I've not punctured them yet and it's really flinty around here. They are fast on the road too, and good in all but the gloopiest mud.

On One Gravel Roads, 40c 120tpi folders for £15 each.
Have tried Vittoria cross tyres but lower volume, Vittoria Touring tyres squared off quickly and scary on greasy grimy back roads, Challenge Gravel racers were fine for a 1000 miles and then chunks started coming out and regular punctures resulted.

Chew,
I got a set of Marathon Supremes, going spare! 700 x 35c, probably had 50 miles max on them. Really good tyres, won't stand up to much off road. If you know what I mean, but on the tarmac ......vaguely exciting!
They are folders, so may go up tubeless but don't quote me on that.
Give us a shout if your interested. Not after the earth for them, be good to see um go to a good home.
Adam.
