BB200 Water borne dodgyness

Post by Dave Barter »

On Saturday I ran out of water on the Bwlch climb to Barmouth and stopped at a stream at the top to fill my bottle. I put a chlorine tablet in and did not drink anything as the instructions said "wait 30 minutes". At Barmouth I emptied it out and refilled it with juice instead but stupidly did not properly clean the teat which would have been submersed as well. I've had 3 days of mild stomach pain now and probably should see a GP. Just wondered if anyone else has any post ride "issues" and what it could be? It is definitely not food poisoning as that tends to go through much quicker in my experience.

Not personally. I drank a lot of stream water on the way round at yhe weekend but have done many years fell running and drinking from streams so its possible that I have developed a bit of a tolerance.

Your stomach issues are due to all the swearing, your Bile ducts are empty. Can't hurt to get a blood test just in case, I did the same, getting rid of the stream water in Barmouth and filling it with tap water at the chip shop.

The outer three toes on both feet are still numb but I don't think it has anything to do with the stream water I drank.

Mostly you need quite an amount of germs to upset your stomach, the chances to get it from a few drops are very, very small. It's probably a mix of a few factors, looking at what you went through last weekend.

Get a good rest.

Painful and swollen right knee. Painful and swollen left ankle. Fingertips and big toes still tingling from the cold on Sunday morning.

Stomach was and is fine. I also used puritabs to ensure water was drinkable.

Still feeling wiped out and knackered too.

Generally something in the water will do really nasty things to you within about 12 hours, very similar to food poisoning. Sounds like your system might just be a bit shell-shocked.

Feet are also still numb, and the doc isn't sure if it is cold induced or a nerve thing related to my lower back... Apart from that I'm feeling better than expected, with minimal DOMS, but I deliberately avoided drinking ground water.

I drank untreated water from several streams, and am fine. A couple of occasions I spent time wiping sheep sub standard etc off the top of the bottle and usually took a small swig and then spat out the first bit anyway, before taking a bigger drink.

List of aches and pains:
sore left heal
tight left Achilles (my HTR achilles too...)
sore left hip joint
a rash on my lower ribs where my heart rate monitor was :???:

Possibly, but the pain is quite sharp, in the past I've felt more drained than painful.

I filled a 3L camelbak on the drovers track between Barmouth and the first Hike-a-bike section, didn't filter it, I was fine. I then refilled at the ford before Coed-y-brenin, I filtered that, not sure it got the Caesium 156 out of the water though. My farts glowed in the dark across that hellish hike after Ysbyty Ifan.

Ok, if we're listing aches:
Left ankle is fnarked.
Left knee also.
pustulant blister full circumference of left thigh from leg warmer silicone grip strip.
Left wrist sore as hell
Blister on right big toe

Think I'll go for a gentle ride tomorrow, see if my body still works.

Having used my sawyer filter for all stream water, I feel reasonably fine
Virtually no aches or pains anymore, just the odd stiff muscle

Yes. There has also been a lot of inspection nothing seems untoward (not sure this thread is going in the right direction)

Can you locate the pain? Right lower tummy, I mean on your lower abdominal muscle? Press that area and the pain increases?
If yes, call your doctor.

I was drinking out of the streams all weekend. No probs.
In fact I've been drinking from streams whilst on the hill all my life with no issues. As long as it's fast flowing and there's not a dead sheep upstream I don't see a problem.

Maybe it's not the water, maybe it's more the fact you've been hard at it for 22 hours eating a steady stream of crap (food, not poo!)
And after watching your video I'll bet you were well dehydrated.

I'm sure a bit of rest and sleep will do you the world of good.

I've come out in small spots all over & I've got some discomfort in my gullet when I swallow.
Feeling better today, although I was up for 22hrs yest with work which can't be helping!

Took in quite a bit a stream water, all via a sayer mini filter though. Did fill up straight from a public toilet tap at one point- don't know where I was was, it was dark, but it was a flat bit & there were Snowdonia Nat Park signs. Looked at the time, but couldn't suss whether it was from a drinkable mains or water-butt type thing. Played on my mind for a bit after & I dumped it at the first opportunity & replaced with more filtered stream water.

I think for me the scars are more mental that physical

I worked out that I drank 8 litres of water, but it was all clean. Started with 2 litres, filled up at Barmouth toilets, then bought a bottle at Transfwnyd, then found a tap on the side of a house at Parc. No aches or pains now ( back on the bike for a steady ride to work today), but Monday was a bit tough on the ankles and thighs.

I still have the strange numbness in most of my toes and some of my fingertips. They did get pretty cold, but it just wasn't cold enough for frostbite. It must be something related to over use or something. Dunno...

My stomach is still a bit whoozy. I was only able to eat soup on Monday and Tuesday and was craving extra salt!

I think a trip to the GP is in order, blood/pee test. If its a water bourne bug then it could vary greatly. Sheep sub standard, pesticides in the water, dead sheep, rats, ticks? the list can go on. But it could also be down to your body's way of acting with the fatigue.
Did anyone mention Ebola yet..........
