How often do you clean your bike?

Post by Bearbonesnorm »

I fully understand that this may rank as the dullest post of all time but I'm interested ... I pretty much wash / degrease my bike after every trip, not because I'm a precious tart but because it means I can hopefully spot anything iffy before it causes problems. However, I know a few folk who only ever do it once in a blue moon or in the case of Chew when I do it for him  So what's your cleaning regime? Are you like me and clean your bike more often than you clean yourself or do you leave it and hope the crap'll hold everything together?
May the bridges you burn light your way

Depends on how minging the trail conditions are. If it's bad then after every ride, if not then after every two or three rides.

Fatbike gets cleaned after every ride but that's because I ride it on the coast.
Singlespeed and hub gear bikes get cleaned as infrequently as I can manage, and I manage quite well with that!

Road bikes - whenever dirty, but I do hate a mucky bike

Mountain bikes - given that most rides make a MTB dirty I guess I clean them after each ride (unless it's a dry ride and the bike stays clean)

I think shiny bikes go faster as well.....

I've just cleaned two. One had about 10 rides and the other 2 since last cleaned. I normally don't bother, it's when I want to do some fettling that I get all particular.

Mind you, all of our hire bikes get washed and checked/adjusted after each hire. I've yet to see conclusive proof that one approach is better than the other.

Think I at least hose the mountain bike down after pretty much every ride then lube the chain and spray a bit of gt85 about, as it always seems like my rides have a certain amount of boggy ground on them around where I live.

I do a more thorough clean when I have time and get things nice and shiny!

The cross bike seems get more dusty than dirty so a quick wipe down usually does there

Bike cleaning???

Oh you mean wait until the mud dries then brush it off. Oil the chain too if it needs it
Either SS or Alfine hub reduces my cleaning/maintenance :)

After every ride … during longer period rides check bolts bits etc at end of day get as much crud off vital parts as possible … got to really as your relying on it to keep you mobile and safe … nowt worse than a rear hub going on you as you hammer down a slope as my mate can attest to!

brush off dirt if i have to fix it, otherwise wire brush chain and oil.
it's not that I can and others can't, it's that I will and others won't.

Same here, it's easier to brush the dried on mud off and lube the chain a day or two afterwards

Another of the joys of Ti as well John eh? Put it away wet and dirty and no worries about corrosion. :-bd

fat bike after every beach ride (good clean) or after every couple of in-land rides

the HT lives in the house so I try to clean that after every ride if I can be arsed

the SS commute bike hasn't been cleaned in years! :-bd

If it's running gears I go over the drivetrain after every ride. If I'm running it SS, I don't, really. The beauty of no suspension.

After every dirty, wet or muddy ride, I get into the shower and wait until Dan has finished cleaning both bikes, then I make a cup of tea and tell him what a good job he's done. Brush off mud, remove and degrease chain.

I do my bit as well and dismantle the derailleur and rear mech before a longer trip. I consider it like a service for a car and I get to see if there are any wee problems and know how to 'fix' the bike should it break. That's the theory anyway.
