Weight Weenie Bike Thread....

Post by FLV »

So, I got a set of scales in the post and spent too much time today weighing stuff.

I was planning a strip and rebuild of my 2 bikes to see how I liked the El mariachi built wit my lightest parts.
Before I started I got to weighing

El Mariachi Single Speed - 26.24 lbs
Frame is 5.8lbs
Ti Kona Raijin 10 speed - 24.72lbs
frame is 4.5lbs

I then stripped them and rebuilt the Salsa with the 10 speed parts, result
26lbs bang on. Could do with being lighter to race on, but I'll work on the gut first...

I've also rebuilt my Ti kona with the Rohloff hub again. 28.75lbs
the rohloff rear wheel with a tyre on is 8.8lbs

Damnit, I weighed all my bikes a while ago - but can't find where I stored the results

I do remember, my cube reaction gtc sl weighs 23lbs bang on stock, and in BearBones 200 guise without food or water it weighed the same as my 120mm full susser (trek fuel ex 9) normally (13.5kg = 29.75lbs).

I need to do a bit of kit weighing this weekend - on the hunt for some lightweight clothes with more specific performance requirements :geek:

I knew you'd be in for this!

I really like the el mariachi and the way it rides, but its the heaviest frame I've ever ridden.

If that is the case, you sir have been spoilt.

I think back to the +35lb DH bikes that I used to ride around...

Here's a spreadsheet I made in september 2012 when I built my Kinesis Crosslight Pro6 for commuting. (Change 1 or 2 for a tick or cross and it will include or exclude that item in the "theory weight" cell at the bottom).

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/185 ... tPro6.xlsx

It's a bit lighter now though as it's running 1x9 rather than 2x9, although the mudgaurds are on for winter and it's covered in grime. Rear wheel is now tubeless too.

Back in the day, my Pace RC300 was down to 19.34 lbs :geek:

Not sure I know what the Pegasus weighs - I like to think it's something like 21 lbs, and though heavier than the Pace ever was, is a lot nicer to ride.

The Puffin on the other hand is something like 34 lbs

Keen to learn where you got your £10 scales from though - cheapest I could find for the same make/ model was £16.

I've got a set of these Brecknell scales that I'm impressed with (25kg max set)

http://www.brecknellscales.co.uk/index. ... t&Itemid=1

Also have some hanson kitchen scales for anything under 5kg for the smaller stuff.

My Stumpy hard tail is 9.2kg - it's a fast fun chuckable bike I love riding, but am now replacing it with a Planet X Dirty Harry that I hope is the same weight, but might end up a tiny bit heavier as 29er tyres are heavier.

If I single speeded the Stumpy it would end up down near 8kg....... Just can't justify it to the boss yet

I go them from eBay. Via the digital scale company. They were actually closer to 11 posted.

I want to race the salsa but the weight is a bit high. It's already 1x10, xtr cranks mechs shifters, SIDS, hope/arch wheels.
I guess rigid forks and lighter wheels is the only way to improve it much.

I could probably lay my hands on a carbon frame, so could use that I guess.

My 1st MTB, a 10 speed Free Spirit with the combo bars & stem weighed 45lbs. Steel everything......

I was born in 1978! Please remember pounds is money! and translate it to kilograms!

Or even better compare it to the weight of my old crosser I carried up five flights of stairs every day... ;)

'76 here. Still imperial for most things, weights mainly, and but metric for bike distances and height gain.

Salsa el maraichi is about 26lbs in singlespeed setup
When the Salsa Mukluk is finished, it will be about 35lbs
Genesis equilibrium road bike is about 21lbs

More importantly, rider weight is 135lbs (something that most weight weenies forget to mention ;) )

My titanium Record 11 equipped carbon everything Van Nicholas Euros roadie weights just over 15 pounds. My OO Fatty weighs something like 38-40. Anyone want to guess which one gets ridden most?
I'm just going outside ...

Yup. Rider weight needs to change by about 10lbs or more :-)

Thought I'd add the weight of a couple of things

Travers Prong carbon fork with 15mm thru axle = 790g
Front Dually 45mm Rim, Hope Pro2, Sapim Race Spokes = 1110g
Rear Dually, Hope pro2 evo SS, Sapim Race = 1350g
Knard 29x3.0 120tpi = 1000g

(dually rim = 680g)
