Pan Celtic 2022

Post by summittoppler »

The Pan Celtic kicks off this Sunday and it looks like they'll have much better weather at the start as compared to last year.

They'll be some dot watching for those of you into that sort of thing

There's some bikes here and some of you may know a few riding:

Ride details here:
Full route

I'm no roadie but I quite like the idea of it

OMG Reg is gonna wet his pants...
We go out into the hills to lose ourselves, not to get lost. You are only lost if you need to be somewhere else and if you really need to be somewhere else then you're probably in the wrong place to begin with.

I freely admit that is getting to be more and more of a problem these days  .

Pan Celtic, looks rather fun actually! I'll have that Brom please after he's finished with it.... some of the other setups look a bit weird/hefty though....

Am I seeing the route correctly? All it shows is Ireland and a tiny bit in Wales. How does that amount to Pan Celtic?
What about Cornwall, Mann, Brittany and Scotland? and that’s only the areas where Celtic languages and culture survived into the medieval period.

I’m just about to go and ride around the world by riding to Taunton and back.
If you are going through hell, keep going.

They’ve taken in Scotland and Cornwall in previous editions of the race

Brittany was on the cards/ideas I believe one year but I think covid/travel spoilt those plans*

Personally I think it’s good to mix up the route each year and visit different places

*if my memory is correct talking to one of the race organisers

2019 looks more like it. This year is Trans Ireland plus ferries. The link up with Wales just looks like extra complexity for the sake of it.

Yep, my memory tells me something about different route variations for a few years and then a grand finale of all the Celtic nations the year after as one of the original ideas....

A fair bit of kit being carried on those bikes, don't you just kip in bus shelters on such a route
And no single speeds :-O
Best keep an eye on brompton man, if his trace suddenly speeds up to 50mph, he's jumped on a bus!

I'm still surprised by how little tyre bikes in these events have.

I reckon the guy who lists Key Items of Kit as including '2 pairs of socks' is a strong contender :) Go Harald!

I do fancy this, but haven't got in previous years. They seem to have quite a following on Facebook etc, so they're doing something right.

Not a Salsa in sight!

I actually found out about this by accident when I was cycling around the great orme in Llandudno, my home town. I was on my arkose, slowly riding up an incline when a rider, fully loaded, and about two weeks in to the race overtook me at quite a pace. I caught up to him and had a brief chat, and he told me all about the race. Turns out the finish line is a few roads away from where I grew up.

I’ll be keeping my eyes on Chris Spray, rider #255.

He’s a genuine all round nice guy and it’s not often I’ll say that about anyone!

Edit - finish at Llandudno is at one of the organisers house

I went to school with Mally, the organiser, he's quite a cyclist himself tbf.
In 2019 I went out and about to take pics and have a chat with a few, they all loved it.
It would be a good excuse to be out on the bike for a couple of weeks....

Just think of a road bike as a lighter. skinnier tyred gravel bike. They'll never catch on.
