Framebuilders and thru axle makers???

Post by Daniel »

I thought maybe the two would go hand in hand.
Trying to buy a 15 x 150mm thru axle with a 1.5 pitch thread with a shaft length of 171mm (for a Jones truss fork) is close to impossible.
(the Wolf Tooth fat TA is readily available but far too long, Paul Components set and forget is not available in this country nor are Jones bits)
So someone said why not try get one custom made?
Good idea I thought, and maybe the BBB mind would know best.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Jones - have you tried Keep Pedalling? They do quite a bit of Jones stuff and may have summat?
May the bridges you burn light your way

Paul Components do one.

Paragon Machine Works do one (although it's 175mm)

171mm length is short for 150mm spacing. Is that 171mm from the inside face of the hex end to the end of the axle? How long is the threaded section?

Rockshox Maxle is 15x1.5 so maybe they'd have something (for the Bluto) but I imagine it'll be longer than 171mm

You could try a longer one (without a step in the shaft) and a die to cut more threads. You might lose any hex broached in the open end but wouldn't be the end of the world.

Try Bothy bikes in Kingussie as well - Dave is a Jones fan and has good coms with Jeff.

Thanks everyone.

Ive tried Robert Axle, no good, too short
Tried Bothy and spoke with the guy, the dealer page doesn't show Jones thru axles
Keep Pedalling don't do Jones anymore
Rockshock etc are far too long
Wolf Tooth do one but its too long at 200mm
The 171mm is the shaft alone with thread.
But yes the Paragon would work, it would stick out a bit but would be fine. Im waiting to hear back from Gavin at August bikes. Or Phil at Saffron says he can get them.
You're right Paul Components do one but its unobtainable. Just Pedal in NL have it but a minimum order of 135 pounds is needed for Brexit postage problems.
Jones own site shows the TA sold out and the postage costs is prohibitively expensive.
The search continues...

Bear Frame Supplies made me a bunch for some steel forks I was building. Good value. Might be worth asking. It might be something they can do relatively cheaply even as a one-off if they are already making them.

ask for Aaron and tell them I sent you.

Thanks stevenshand

I did try Bear Frame but they told me no such custom orders were possible, if it’s a one off it might be a more expensive venture for them.
However, I just sent another email with some name dropping so let’s wait and see.

Err have you had a look on AliExpress? I've ordered a spare rear axle for my fat bike off there and there was a huge choice. I know it's dealing with the evil empire but if you're stuck it might be worth a look.

I never realised that Jacob Rees Mogg owned AliExpress

Its not cheap but I found one...
...in a shop named Shift Up in France, in case anyone is interested?

Again, thanks for everyones input, it made me dig a little deeper than before.

(Aliexpress has lots but not the right one for me)

The thru axle is supplied with the frame, how did you end up with a frame and no axle?

I did get one with the frame but Ive some how managed to round out the hex key part and have had to replace it twice!

So its helpful to have a spare incase it happens again, others have also reported its happened to them.
Maybe its poor quality materials or misuse but it does seem to happen.

Yup mine is getting a bit worn. I was debating piercing it out to a 6mm hex but I'll wait until I bork it properly before attempting. Think I might get one of them as a spare in any case so thanks for hunting that out. Failing that it will be a bit of M10 studding....
