Sorry to have to drop out.

Post by GJWHands »

Very disappointed.
Got to Caersws train station at 10:20am this morning, after about 1 mile of cycling to the start, a Black Nissan Novaro with a wide trailer on the back was speeding down the road and unable to stop, an on coming car had to brake to a stop to allow the Nissan through, It was then that the Nissan swerved in to avoid the car but the side of the trailer hit me.
Both cars drove off whilst I was in the side of the road with damage to the bike, as the impact of the trailer caused me to swerve inwards and I clipped the curb with my pedal, which stripped the thread on the left hand crank.
Despite trying to repair, the crank arm was completely destroyed.
Another entrant (Andy) to the Welsh Ride Thing drove past a little later and very kindly took me to the start of the event, to see if any other members could assist in repairing the crank arm, despite there best efforts it was clear the only repair possible was to replace the crank Arm. Andy drove me to Aberystwyth from Pennant and Overwhelmed by his support. None of the bike shops had a replacement part, so now on the train coming home.
At the end of the day I’m lucky I’m coming home, that was a scary hit and a reminder to all that speed kills!
I also have to give a big thank you to Andy, Stu and Martin for looking at ways to get me up and running again. I also have to thank all you special people for your support, I hope to be back. Probably with a new Crank, hopefully a new bike :-)

Sorry you couldn't get sorted Julian ... not much consolation but I'll pop your T shirt in the post.

Downer. Andy is one of the good-uns, such a shame you couldn't get it sorted.

Some car drivers are just such utter ( insert strongest swear word allowed)
Mistakes happen but not stopping is rightly a crime and the act of a utter ( repeat word above )
Glad you are ok which is the main thing

Utterly reprehensible behaviour by the people driving the cars.
Glad you only suffered bike damage and nothing worse.
There’s a lot of pretty shitty trailer driving around here and I’ve come pretty close to being whacked more than a few times.
If you are going through hell, keep going.

Its taken nearly 2 weeks to source a replacement crank from Spain, along with a new set of LOOK X-Track Race pedals. Thankfully I'm now back up and running again.

Hopefully I'll make the BB200 in October.
Hopefully with no issues.
Stay safe and thanks again for your great hospitality for the brief period I was there.

Glad you got sorted Julian and hopefully you got your T shirt as small consolation.
