Waterproof Jackets....again.

Post by samwise »

Hi All.

Yep, another jacket recommendation thread...

I'm looking for a waterproof for commuting and bikepacking trips. Ideally nice and packable but not too worried about weight. Bright colours preferred! A bonus if I could also use it for some summer hillwalking and leave the big mountain jacket at home :-bd

I've been tempted to go down the Paramo Ostro/Enduro windproof+fleece route, also considering the Rab Kinetic 2.0 (I basically live in my Borealis Jacket when its not raining) but not sure how the cut would work out on a bike.

Keen to hear some suggestions from you lot! :geek:

Cheers,
Sam

Winter Outdry and ok for summer if not roasting ( but a bit sub optimal )
Paramo are too heavy but I have a standard Velez for walking general winter use

I've used my paramo on the bike very infrequently. Has to be just the right conditions, but it did save me on a epically wet bikepacking trip in the Lakes. Mine is the Third Element and no longer made. The bike specific ones work great on the bike but not so good in mild weather, they're just too warm

I'm making do with Outdry for bikepacking trips. Works well enough but generally only wear a waterproof if it's raining, much prefer a windproof

Columba Outdry for winter and constant or heavy rain

Gore R7 Shakedry for summer and showers*

*R = Running = Has a hood that can fit over or under a helmet
C = Cycling = No hood so rain runs down your back inside the jacket

Paramo if its sub 12 degrees, lightweight columbia outdry if its more than 12 degrees. (Or thereabouts - but that seems to be the point that above which a paramo is too warm)

Mine has been pretty poor if I'm honest, glad I didn't pay full price for it.
It's something I'll use if I know the forecast isn't torrential, a bit like Paramo

I think that's the one I got. It doesn't breath very well but so far has kept a fair bit of rain out. Not used it in many hours of downpour yet but I have it for those days when this isn't likely to happen.

Outdry jackets look weird regardless, so the colour doesn't matter much.

Maybe not on some moorland track but on the road I'd rather have something bright over something that blended into the general mirk.

I'm fairly sure my grey one has some hi-viz bits ... but will need to check.
