Surly Krampus 29+ or similar?

Post by CJR61 »

Tried 29+ front and fancy the whole shebang.

Thought of a Singular Rooster (as like Singular) but thinking for trail riding, bombing around the Krampus is better suited as the Rooster is more mile munching? Kids/time prohibits but adventures or bike packing currently but maybe something for the future.

Any opinions welcome but I’m aware that your bike (as is mine) is the best!

Stay well

i have owned 3 x 29+ bikes in the past. a Jones plus and 2 x surly ecr bikes.
i never got on with the Jones. for various reasons. the ecr's however were both fantastic for what i bought them for. long steady riding.
i rode 100 miles on both of them, over mixed terrain, carrying full camping gear. perfect. i sold the last one to get some funds for my present bike. if i wanted a bike purely for trail riding, a krampus with some sus forks would be ideal.

Krampusess (Krampi?) are great bikes and handle long distance very well (Done two days of the HT and the YD300 on mine as well as plenty of other long rides) They are also a hoot on any trail you care to mention - definitely more fun than my Jones but not as comfortable. The ECR is no more sadly as this was a good bike too but the latest Kramp has a slightly lower BB / stack than my original version one, as well as having the usual mounts for bags and bottles.

Highly recommended!

Thanks both,

Good to hear.

Phil - what rear axle setup have you used on the Krampus?

Assume we're talking 45/50mm ID wheels and 29x3.0?

Cheers

I’d echo what Phil said about Krampi.
I’ve had one since 2016 and love it to bits. It’s a much more capable descender than my previous full suss 26er.

Some notes of caution though: 29+ tyres etc are getting hard to come by. That is to say 29x3 are hard to find. 2.6 or 2.8 are as big as you can find mostly.
Krampi build into heavy bikes. I’m ok with that as I’m a plodder - I rode to a Black Badge on mine - but it’s worth bearing in mind.
If you are going through hell, keep going.

If you fancy something similar I have a medium 2015 genesis longitude rolling chassis with a set of Hugo wheels and 3 inch tyres that I keep telling myself to clean up and sell.

Thanks all.

Sadly i'm XL so will be on the hunt for a bigger size.

I'm currently bombing around on a Pace 29er and thats definitely not lightweight so the extra bulk isn't too much of a concern. I like how the 29+ tyre (front) rolls and do like some steel forgiveness.

Exciting stuff!

Yeah they’re great at not so subtle ploughing over stuff. Very forgiving of my complete lack of finesse.
My advice is make the most of the plusness of any plus bike… ie. widest rims and widest tyres possible.
I have some old 55mm OD rims from FatLab and only run 3” tyres for max grip/float. Maybe 13psi front 15psi rear (total rider/bike/gear 110kg) Feels a little weird at speed on tarmac but rolls acceptably well for a 24hr/200km ITT.
If you are going through hell, keep going.

Its' the old one so QR front and rear 135/100. On mine I actually use a superstar chromo 10mm dia QR spindle with a 10mm thru axle hub as I have it single speed and I convinced myself this would reduce the chances of axle slippage. New ones use Surlys knotboost which allows you to run anything.

Mine has a velocity dually front and WTB scraper rear (40 / 45 IW) with 29x3. As Lune Ranger says, 29x3 tyres are a bit thin on the ground at the mo and have an uncertain future although the more people who buy 29 plus the more chance we have of keeping the supplies going! I'm assured that Trek will be continuing the XR2 and 4 for a while yet, once they manage to re stock.

More recent Kona Units are designed around 2.6 rear, and a fair bit of room in the back plus sliding dropouts. Something to consider as well as those mentioned, and the lack of 2.8 - 3.0 tyres. Not a stealth ad just yet, but I do have a 2017 XL longitude that may be going soon. It's not the full 29+ of the 2015 one but i'm pretty sure the clearance is the same. (and the 2015 one wasn't a full 29+er, just had tons of clearance).

Thanks for all the replies. Some great knowledge here!

I'm thinking with 120 29+ squishy forks it would be a hoot.

This is going to be a present (from the extended family) for my upcoming 'zero' birthday so do like the idea of owning from new (although that clearly has it's own issues at the moment) but may be interested in the Longitude @faustus....let me know some details.

Forks…

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Manitou-Matt ... 56-20017-0

I’ve never felt any need for suss on my Krampus although I do use a USE suspension seat post to stop me pogoing off the saddle when travelling at speed over tough ground.

Actually, I have a black XL Krampus Ops that has been sitting pretty much unused since I realised I could fit 29x3 in my Broken Road. If consider selling it if you want?

I've got a 29+ front wheel I use on my Jones from time to time but it's big, a 650b+ at both ends would be the same size ish as a normal 29er, but then 26+ is also a thing, not full fat just 26x3, that could be fun too.
